secretary of the select committee of the legislature investigating lease holds and rentals the letter pointed out lhat if no word to ih contrary was received from the municipality by august w52 this committee would recommend that rent controls be discontinued in acton the order granting exemption from controls was to be dated september 2 1952 anc would j not be effective until march 2 of this year this meant that there was a waiting period of six months before the order discontinuing controls was to be effective the letter received by council allowed a change of decision during the six months wailing period it pointed out that it was quite possible during the six months 16 notify the committee to have rent controls continued an action of this kind is done by council pass ing a resolution requesting rent controls be con tinued and forwarding a copy to the rentals ad ministrator not later than march i 1953 tf council decides the removal of iheregula tions is premature they may be assured rental iuliticiifwiircontinu lobe enforced the let ter emphasized no action was taken by the 1952 council on the matter and as it stands now rental control regulations will be removed on march 2 1953 any indication that rent control if retained would be administered by the local council is purely supposition it may be eventually or if enough municipalities do not wish to retain the controls but the letter received by the town gave no indication of it rom controls have been kicked around be tween the federal and provincial governments and it is quite possible that the municipality might get brought in sinoo neither senior governments like the hot subect on which there is a great deal of controversy the main information briefly is thai rent con trols come off in march in acton if any move was made to retain them and rtassed by council they would be administered as at present there are definite examples of inequality in many local rents a maximum based on the equalized assessment might be much more equal the good old days may have seemed better scotchmen remember sunday is theinniveriary of ihe oreal poel of scotland whose poems an imd and loved in many confidence in them stuffing pork butter cheese potatoes eggs and such things into cahs or into storage or offering them at cut prices abroad has cost us a lot of money in the last 10 years stuff ing a little extra beef into ourselves has been far more pleasant and far less costly when the american embargo abruptly halted our exports of beef and livestock last year there were all sorts of dire predictions 11 was said that unless the government came to the rescue moun tains of beef would pile up in canada and the trfdustry would be ruined ottawa did come to the rescue but onl with a series of moderate fjoor prices and there was no cheap sale of beef abroad just a compare t vely modest shipment to britain the canadian livestock mdustr did not qo broke and no huge surplus of beet
