at show after quilting industriously for an hour at their originalrydeslgn ed quilt in competition at the col iseum toronto last saturday 10 ladies of dublin w 1 were judged the best and miss minnie somer ville was presented with a cheque for 100 for the group the comp etition was held at the canadian hobby and crafts show a dozen or so of the ladles of dublin women s institute had been busily engaged the past week at the home of miss minnie som erville and mrs p kennedy brock ave acton in preparing a quilt for the competition which was under the sponsorship of kate aitken one ot he require ments was that it was to be an or iginal design and the honor of this goes to miss somerville and her darter mrs kennedy in designing the quilt and to mrs manscll nellis and mrs wm frank and tl qatttfng-to- ladwf-ti-othbr-quiltinb- be used the quilt is of fine white broad cloth blocks each block 12 square with the national emblems of the united kingdom and canada the tudor rose scotch thistle irish shamrock and the maple leaf appliqued on in color above these blocks are the royal crown and jewels and the prince of wales feathers at each side with the mot to let dien meaning i serve embroidered thereon on either side of the royal crown arc the names elizabeth and philip and underneath are the words commemorating th royal visit 1951 embroidered in color the quilt was partially quilted when on saturday morn ing 15 ladles journeyed to toromo with their quilt and quilting fram es in the afternoon 10 ladies quilt ed for in hour in the coliseum along with several other groups of ladies from different places with their respective quills when the awards were made dublin worn ens institute placed first and a cheque for 100 was presented to miss somerville on behalf of the group the second prize was awarded to knox presbyterian church dun das and third prize to erskine united church toronto the judg inn uas based on the originality ot the design neatness of workman ship and speed of performance mrs l ferguson is president of dublin women s institute and mrs alex ross is convenor ot the quilt committee along with these two mrs mnchis miss m somerville mrs p kennedy mrs a near mrs wm frank mrs w watkins mrs duncan moffat mrs w mc intre mrs j van fleet mrs a e crossmin mrs c j vangooz en and miss mildred wilson this is the third time the dubln women s institute has brought home honors recently with their sewing skill last june in compet ition they were awarded first pnze for their quilt at the halton district annual held in knox church acton which is composed of 23 institutes last october the same quilt received first prize it the area convention held in kit chener review sketch plans for school building p preliminary sketch plans of the buildings and sites at the three schools in north halton high school district were presented to the board at a special meeting held in stewarttown township hall on tuesda een ing by barnett and reader architects the plans presented show not on ly the present buildings but sketch in the future expansion which might be pio n a in al of the threetowns the sketches include guidance on sites available in acton two si es snow rifling nets visitor no money ladies aid dinner host to knox choir on thursday evening february 5 the members of knox choir with their husbands and wives were the guests of the ladies aid at a socnl evening dinner was served at 7 p m the menu included turkey and all the trimmings following the dinner a program was enjoyed with rev r h arm strong as mafcter of ceremonies several humorous readings were given by mrs r h parker and mr les duby contributed several vocal and musical numbers dr a j buchanan showed some of his on pictures including many taken at the various church gatherings the board arc mr bird john blng ham r j cunningham and wil- im dobbie accommodation for increasing numbers of pupils in the public schools at norval and stewarttown is a problem facing the board this year at the present time pupils in the three senior grades in these two centres are brought by bus to georgetown while a few dublin district student come to acton to school although an addition or a newly formed ontario fire chiefs association chief walmslcy of burlington announced the construction of a new fire hall to serve burlington and district the cooper con st ruction co of hamilton have been given the contract to build the two storev building consisting of three truck bays with recreation and auxiliary rooms upstairs at a cost of 38 000 to be completed in fi ur months lunch was served charles wood was recently named western area installation superintendent of northern elec tnc and will leave acton to take up residence tn- toronto mr wood is a former councillor and member of receive board approval will have to go to the municipal board and the department of education for approval before detailed plana and specifications can be proceeded with everv member of the board was something should be done to assist the unfortunate people of great britain and the netru r lands that had homes and land swept away in the worst floods of that section on record joe hurst was named to head the committee of five to start the ball rolling mayor f g oakes presiding at the organization netting reported muny requests from citizens and organizations for an effort through tht community
