pfrormx naftfa th acton free press actck 3k thursday march ulh 1w v j1m news from haltons farm lands bnwes made i bacon show during the past week the town alp directors of the halton hog producers association selected the entries for the annual halton bacon show to be held in milton town hall earlier this week the hogs were marketed at the canada packers plant in toronto where they were slaughtered and put into cure one side ot each carcass with various cuts from the correspond ing side will be on display at ml ton there i keen rtvalrv between the various townships for the inter township award which was won by esquesing township in 1k2 j president erwfn gunby of the halton association in urn a ted when interviewed that in 10 far a his township is concerned their choice was very limited owing to the very few hogs ready for market during the current week mr gunby also stated that in his opinion halton producers could increase their per cent age of a hogs materially bv making greater use of the scales in determining when their hogs wer at the proper weight in short too many potential a hogs arc being spoiled by over finishing in 1952 halton producers mark eted 28 457 hogs at which numb r onjj 36 7 graded a on the rail this is in contrast to 20235 hogs marketed in 1951 with 41 a3 and 19 037 hogs sold to the pro censors in 1950and 42 3- a b thai ofthecost hog production study cednc harrop haltons reprcscntath e in ticsligatton marketed appro x lmatcly 150 hogs each year of which number his percentage o a s was 80 and 82 respectively mi harrop however makes use of the scales weekly in order to determine when his hogs are up to weight producers would do well to re member that despite the loss of the british export market quality is equally important to day as it was in short our domestic mar ket is our most important mar ket if not our only outlet during the pist year our domestic markc absorbed some 94 000 hogs weekly however during 1952 pork pro ducts were considerably cheaper than deef now that beef and pork prices bear a closer relation bhip to one another it is only bv marketing quality hogs tha pro duccri can hope to retain thei 1952 position in the domestic mar ket the following is a list of those from whose swine hepls entries were selected for the halton bacon show trafalgar v b bradlej john chapman j allan dixon claton may the coat of producing milk over the p e ceding year in lh twelve month period enl ing may 1st 1950 the average cost in the 24 herds in west halton was 3 38 per cwt for the following twelve months the average cost per cwt in the same herds was s4 15 per cwt in south halton group where the figures of 24 herds wore considered the cost figure this past year wm 3 74 the average price rccelveh by the producers in west halton for the jear ending last may was 4 212 and for south halton the iv crage figure was 4 18 per cwt it is also interesting to note that the cast per pound of butterfat ir south halton wis 107 and 1 11 per lb butterfat in west halton since going to press the annual meetings of the three halton d h i a groups have been held in asmuch as dr h l patterson of the farm economics branch wis scheduled as the speaker no doubt further details will be available not only for the two groups men tloned but also for the east halton group as well seed germination poor recent reports from the plant products division of the canada department of agriculture would indicate an unusual number of musty and low germinating seed pies one sample of oats some hatdiscolored b othacw1 germination no doubt many i r stands can be avoided by a seed test including germination prior to seeding home grovji grain for seeding should be tested at a seed laboratory or failing this be at least subjected to a home germin ation test an extension circular entitled germination seed at hoi available at the milton office of the ontario deparment of agr culture it is our opinion that it would be good economics for a large per cent age of growers to purchase their seed requirements the margin between the cost of feed grain and good quality s backed by government grade is very nar row needless to add there is no better place to purchase one re quirements than at the halton se d fair scheduled for milton all exhibitors in the open show to quahf must have seed for sile and all entries are backed by gov emment grade as to pun y and germination our slogan for 1953 should be know what you sow harold tyrrell new president halton junior farmers held thei annual meeting on
