experience like many i never waa in love with school and despite the admonition of more mature mind thai school days were ihe best i have yet lo regret ihe end of my formal education today in acton high school there must be some whowtlt look on the end of formal schooling as a new found freedom it un t you will never find release from responsibility and if you do you will and hide enjoyment in it li acton a good place for the student who has finished wjme particular stage of high school acton is essentially an industrial centre i presume wages are on a level comparable with other in fualry bul ihrn wages arent ihe only thing one should work for there should be a satlsfact ion gained from um work on spends five days a week doing there should be some sense of pride in seeking to do ihe best job possible shorter work weeks and short er hours have suggested that work is something to do as little of as possible that can be traced back to the fact that the indust rial revolution introduced many machines streamlining product ion and dividing it into many production lino operations with the worker seeing and experlenc lng little satisfaction in the com pleted product he lost his in dlvlduallty and with it went some craftsmanship few are interested in learning a trade little wonder when higher wages for less work and less responsibility can be found without too much trouble but there arc many things for the retiring student to consider well before settling down in acton or any other place so think it over the good old days may have seemed better back in 1903 at a future meet if over 200 applications were re ceived by the school board for the high school staft the list was carefully examined and mr a d francis fine residence on willow herbert of mimico was engaged schools out this week all school children start the long summer vacation some of them have already started most of us can remember the oy there was when the f nal bell rang and books were taken home and forgotten and everyone shouted hurrah for holidays we don t believe the exube rance of youth has changed much down through the years when it comes to summer hoi days there were always ihe summer chores to be done but there was a free and easy way of doing these helping tasks tsen there came the age when a summer ob was looked forward to and of course the opportunity to earn some money ot your own the jobs have changed with the times but the same funamental decisions and days of play come to the school children today as they have done down through the years that any of us can remember other things have changed too increased traffic and the motor cars have made the streets unsafe places for ball games or the hour or so of fun the summer holiday per od means too that motorists must watch more closely as they dr ve all the streets and highways where 1 ttle groups may be start ng out for a day s outing the days in which school s out should be happy ones a good resolve for all of us m ght well be to endeavor to keep them happy and have them all return to school s reopen ng re freshed and the better for the fine summer days cf leisure an official of the highways department that ex press highways were not going to be cluttered up with roadside stands and other attractions we are simply throwing money away when we buy expensive nghtof way and build roads capable of handling high speed traffic safely and then allowing them to be hopelessly cluttered with local traffic and local business there is not any sense in spending millions of money in cut ting down grades hills and curves if traffic is go ing to be reduced to a crawl in any case two of the outstanding examples of bad high way routing are to be found in ontario at bur hngton beach and at sunnyside in toronto amusement parks are located on both sides of a h ghway carrying four lines of traffic every weekend and during the summi months when motor traffic is heaviest the greatest number of people swarm these places down by the water front we think they have a perfect right to be there the beaches were in use and built up long before express highways were in use now traffic piles up at both ends of the beaches for miles and crawls at a snails pace both motorists and pleasure seekers are made un happy by the situation a first item on the high way program should be to clean up these two badly planned express highways in ontario and remove them from the summer playground area giftmumetlike wc know you will be interested in parts of a verv long letter in last weeks
