transformer burns drains flood firemen town workmen and hy dro employees fought through wednesday night arid early morn ing to restore services and control ore following a torrential down pour of rain accompanied by sharp lightning the bam on the farm of john osksunp half a mile south of no m highway on the first line was struck by lightning shortly after 9 pjn and three brigades from er in acton and rockwood battled to save the bam until the early hour of thursday the comer of the barn was hit first and a bucket brigade hastily formed to a nearby pump was un able to control the flames that that source the bam was saved from des tructlon with only minor damage to the outside the straw in the mow had to be completely rcmov ed i to prevent a further outbreak town employees worked into the night to make sure storm drains were operating the drams were running full but could still not cope with the heavy downpour that flooded basements and created small rivers in the ditches and along the curbs hydro emplov ees v orked 9 pm until after midnight a transformer was burned out at th beardmore plant when lightning struck the tall chimney scattering bricks and disrupting a bank of transformers at the base affecting the pole transformer feeding the plant many smaller cut outs also had to be replaced the griffin sprowl barn was also hit by lightning during the storm but sufficient help was around to bring the blaze under control without calling the fire brigade telephone lines in some sections were also put out of operation and are being repaired thursday to day
