the acton free press acton ontario ti1uiihday aimiii irtlli 1934 itseastsr this it the easter season the time of year when everything is new the easter story of the resurrection and of new lite and new hope for all mankind ts old yet ever new in our part of the world the resurrection of new life after the winter sleep teems to emphasize and bring home most clearly the spin of easter it finds expression in many worldly ways such as new clothes changes about the homes and in the garden activities a new zest and pleasure in being out of doors after a winter of indoor life and activity then there are also the many other edibfe things thai some way have come to be as sociated with the easter season such as eggs bun nies flowers hot cross buns and a list of things that seems to be limited only by man s initiative they have all become an accepted part of our easter customs but the core and heart of easter is in the mes sage of the resurrection without it the easter tide is empty and meaningless with it we find new hope and py and expression in the customs which have grown and become a small part of the easter time it is fitting that the churches of the land are therefore the centres around which the people find the culmination of the joy of easter and during this week and on sunday the spirit that makes easter will radiate from the churches of our community and our land it s a oyous time and a message of hope that easter brings very necessary this is the season of the year when our feathered friends and the old birds who can af i ford it are making the trek back from the south it s also the time when we who have wintered here are prodded by the need and the desire to i maintain the appearance of the neighborhood and i the community to get into the spring clean up along about this time of year also comes the urge of every housewife to clean and rearrange the house there isn t a doubt that there is a need for spring clean up in every household and commun ity things would soon begin to look pretty run down if once a year a new start were not made spring after all is about the best time for such activity the weather is more pleasant out of doors the temperature is better for strenuous activity than it will be in mid summer and good ness knows there s been enough surplus accumu lation both inside and outside to warrant a real clean up then too there s the danger of fire if things are allowed to accumulate in places dot easily accessible so get out the garden tools sell or swap un wanted items load up the garbage collection with the unsaleable stuff clean up the paml brushes and take the household confusion with a smile be cause it s spring clean up time a firm and just budget no budget of any taxing body finds approval from all the people but it seems to be agreed that under the circumstances the latest effort of mr abbott can be commended it is always good to learn that the trend is toward reduction of taxa tion and not creating new tax burdens in these days of return of world trade and competition for markets the products of canadian industry must not be taxed out of its field the answer of mr abbott to mr duplessis of quebec on his income tax proposals as special privilege for that province will be applauded by 90 per cent of the people of canada it took courage to make the stand against the apparent popularity of the present provincial government of quebec it is disappointing that the party m op position was so weak m its stand for favoritism for one province canada needs and apparently has a qovernmetit that com der thu couniry n one g nat on and net a aroup of 1 0 nd vidua unif one cannot blame mr dl pie for ask no for special confess om for qi ebec it s esv to s lfllie what would happen f his request was granted the government handl nq of he s tua tion as f rm and dec s ve it vas the bes g light of mr abbotts buoaet althog id lece ve the prom ence ot seme e- at home and abroad the system which compels youths to remain at school to the age of 16 is said to be causing serious trouble in new york high schools a com mittee set up by the board of education to study the matter has reported that inscjrne high schools so much lime and attention is given to under 16 delinquents that little time is loft for normal students slates lewis milligan of toronto the committee found numerous examples of vandalism against school property private pro perty and pupils personal possessions theft forgery obscenity and vulgarities disruption of classes throwing of food turning on of gas and interference with fire drills as well as truancy and cutting classes many of those responsible were ouths of 15 who were said to be simply putting in time until they reached 16 and were free to leave it is not necessary to go lo new york or great britain or any other country to get examples such as found by an investigating commiltee and we cannot agree with a recommendation for special classes or legislation to deal with the problem in recent years there has been a shortage of skilled workers and employers have had to de pend largely upon skilled immigrants from the old countries the school leaving age may have been responsible for that situation the idea that every boy should go through high school has produced a lot of white collar workers and brainless zoot suiters who should have been put to work in their teens we agree with the suggestion of one commcniator who said a much simpler and much less expensive answer to the problem would be to reduce the school leaving age to h with nobody past that mark remaining in school unless his ability and behaviour warranted it high schools in us as in canada are wasting millions trying to educate hoodlums who neither can nor want nor deserve to be educated we need to take another look at our educa tional program an item that is the largest in our icipal tax list and see if it is producing the reading bfw w tfct unt 53 auditors don t feel a bit uncomfortable then in adding our voice to ihe chorus of praise to spring set up by our colleagues in other papers and publications to the winter wdary spring needs no formal salutation the cold winds and snowy blasts have been warmed away and replaced by a kinder climate to those of us who have seen more springs come and winters go than we sometimes like to admit we greet spring with a quiet relief the younger we are the less spring as a climatic changeover means to us and the more important become its symbols and tokens of fancy spring is the classic host to young
