halton was honored last friday with a brief visit from dr j d maclarhlan president of the ont ario agricultural college he was accompanied by mr e 1- mclough- ry associate director of extens ion ontario department of agric ulture they came to halton to see for themselves the results be- ing secured in controlling wild carrot or our township roadsides a visit was made to the 11 plots laid down last spring by the halton soil and crop improvement as sociation with the cooperation of custom weed sprayer medforth pewtress on the fourth linem trafalgar on the fourth betowtfiie ipjiven road a visit was also made to the plots laid down in late june by pro fessor c g waywell of the botany department of the ontario agric ultural college on the third line of trafalgar below the c-pr- tracks lots 10 11 and 12 in addition they drove over some 12 miles of roads in esques- ing t certainly after their visit they were pretty well con vinced that 24d is not doing a satisfactory job of controlling wild carrot on our roadsides it cer tainly looks stated dr maclaca- lan as if youve got to get some 24 5t into your mixtures impressed by keaoa that incidentally has been our contention as a result of uje work done the past two years as pointed out in our article of last week brushkill is one part of 2d to one part 24 5t and the only plots whett- we k a satisfactory kill of wild carrot in 1954 were those on which brushkill was applied at the rate of two pounds of acid to the acre this hould not be interpret ed to mean that 24d will not give a satisfactory kill of wild carrot on privately owned property as we pointed out last week 24d will give a 90 to 95 per cent- kill of wild carrot the first year it is ap plied to an area in subsequent years t appears to be another story both dr maclaehlan and mr mcloughry were very much im pressed by the condition of the county roads where county eng ineer roy smith for a number of years has been using atlacide plus 24d incidentally a h martin director of the field crops branch and his assistant kenneth fallis were out in halton earlier in the week to look over the wild carrot situation when mr fallis saw the 11 plots laid down on may 24 he stated if i had not been out here and seen these plots sprayed on may 24 i wirildhavc th was something wrong with you method of application it has taken a long time but it begins to look as if we finally convinced some of the senior of ficials of the ontario department of agriculture that more research work is required on wild carrot control paint bee date set by fair bd when milton fair opens septem ber 23 the visiting public will find that the board of directos have been active during the past year new public wash rooms have been erected down near th grandstand a new fence has been erected around a goodly portion of the grounds the main hall has been made more attractive etc attkeir meeting on thursday evening last week plans were made to hold a painting bee on the after noon of monday august 22 the board of directors cattle exhibitors and others interested are all ex tended an invitation to bring a paint brush and help to improve the appearance of the cattle ring race track etc it is surprising what a little paint will do and as many hands make light work we hope to see a lot of willing workers wielding paint brushes over at the milton fair grounds on august 22 plan open meet on night school last week an initial meeting convened by mrs velma norris was held to make plans for an open meeting relative to night school classes or courses in adult educ ation for milton district we under stand from mrs may johnson sec retary of the local committee that the open meeting is to be held in the milton high school on tues day evening august j all interested temperatures has cer tainly pepped up halton corn fields franktyit is sume years since we have seen so many prom ising looking corn fields in this county true there are always ex ceptions but in general it cer tainly looks as if a lot of people are going to have more corn than their sitos will accommodate drownings in farm ponds points to need for safety precautions the heat wave of the past few sort of supervision a specified weeks has made many people hours for swimming many of these realise the value of farm ponds for recreational purposes unfortunate ly judging by the press there is growing number of fatalities assoc iated with farm ponds lit would therefore seem that a safety program should go hand in hand with the increasing number of farm ponds farm people are 4 iwayabjsytwl with theincrras- 2 inc scarcity of tarpi help this past caw ek lave it possible been bqsttr than formerly tfarwthtmss in cosnmunitie wtswe a local farm pond is being wnd to swtamning hole it looks ih m if th cooaraunity would be wall advtedto work out some ponds are real danger spots for small children in many cases they have steep slopes and abrupt drop offs there is also some danger from entanglement with under w ter growths in our opinion a life preserver should be handy or failing that some old rails should be available to push ott to the the toll of farm ponds is mount ing many of those dead were young people whose life expectancy was ahead of them anything therefore as pointed out recently by h w irwin- pepartment of ag ricultural engineering any of us can do to reduce this tragic waste is eminently worthwhile lazy pat farms swine club hosts on august 11 the halton 4h swine club met at lazy pat farms palermo owned by j m pigutt of hamilton a total of 18 members and a few
