r r- m page ten the acton free press acton ontario i r thursday september i 1955 x 3sse 7ce6 at ottawa by don peacock canadiariprrss staff writer ottawa cp the head of canadas 40maiv delegation to tho geneva atomsforpeace conference believes that information disclosed itjerc is not expected to hurry the advent ol economfe electricity producing plants in fcahfidn william j bennett president of atomic rnrrgy nf cimnrin itfi j i 1 fold a press conference on his re turn that the most optimistic fore casts still are that the goal will not be- reached until at least 1983 or 1964 there were no developments at geneva to change our view that we still haxe a lot of very toimh en gineering problems to beat before wo can say we have economic at omic power he said even thlit date depends on the success of ex perimental power plants russia at same stage mr bennett said details of de monstration power reactors given by the united kingdom and the united states were in a large part already known in canada inform ation disclosed by russia also showedlhat the soviet union is in the first stage of power reactor de sign details of the experiment power plant now in operation in russia were not radical in char acter i would say that the russians are at about the same stage in power reactor design as canada the united states and britain he said all are taking the first steps in the design and construction of experimental reactors he said ho fears that forecasts by some scient ists at geneva may have given a wrong impression that economic allypriced atomic power is just around the corner meslo4hc experimental reactors including one being built by can- ada would be in operation late in esss take setaside in september dairy farmers of canada adver tising setaside will be collected in ontario during the month septem ber according to erie kitchen sec retarymanager of- the national pro ducers organization the normal june setaside which proceeded as usual in the rest of canada had been postponed in ontario to coin cide with the ontario stabilization plan which was to have started in august but which was subsequent ly postponed mr kitchen states that agreement has been reached between the dairy producer and operating groups in ontario to carry the setaside for ward with vigor during the month of september the setaside of a centapound butter fat finances the national advertising program in feupport of dairy foods ontario pro ducers setaside more than 143000 in 1954 as their contribution to the national advertising budget of 367- 000 in view of the fact that milk pro duction is down normally in- sep tember mr kitchen points out that the cooperation of all branches of the industry in onta is impc tive if this province is to maintain its contribution to the national bud get in a joint statement a steel president ontario dairy processors council and w h hoiles president ontario milk producers coordinat ing board have pointed out to all operators and producers the valu able jtob of dairy food promotion provided by the national program 11 was their conviction that the special september setaside should receive strong support from all branches of the industry are canned foods really nutritous canned products play their part in supplying necessary nutrients when fresh fruits and vegetables are not available but canning pro cedures are necessary which will re turn to best advantage the vitamins minerals carbohydrates and pro teins essential to good health most canning processes require that vegetables be blanched or scalded and packed into tin cans to gether with hot torine and sealed and processed to effect sterilization fruits are not always blanched but arc normally packed hot prior to sealing and cooking although the heat applied in blanching and pro cessing does have some destructive effect on certain vitamins its ad verse effect is minimized by pack ing the product hot thus excluding a considerate amount of air from the can ascorbic acid vitamin c and thiamine vitamin bi are most susceptible to heat destruction the carbohydrates and proteins are rendered more digestible by heat it has been found however that higher temperatures and shorter blanching times favor greater re tention of the water soluble vitamin and mineral content of fresh pro ducts blanching should be ade quate to destroy the oxidative en zymes in fruits and vegetables while causing a minimum of loss due to the dissolving of nutrients iy the blanching water steam blanching when properly handled is generally preferred since less water soluble nutrients are dissolved than in water blanching at estimated consumption of canned foods suggests that tomato juice peas corn baked beans toma toes and green and wax beans may be considered th more important canned products retention of as corbic acid thiamine niacin and riboflavin in canned tomatoes and tomato juice is good but is-isome- what less in beans peas v and- corn approximately onethird of the nu- ilgjgntjjjji prijsent in theitguld bring of beans peas and corn 1957 or in 1958 ttiey would haves to be operated for two or thrt years to give scientists the inform at ion they need to build lai gt stations capable of producing el ectricity economically i it would then take from three to four yeai to construct such a power station major accompli at gen eva- he said was the declassificv ion of itn enormous amount of in formation on peacetime uses of at omic energy especially in the pow er field russias main contribution at geneva was in the field of ntoinu research power reactors and rnd lation hazards both russia and tin uk however were reluctant disclose many engineering details of their experimental power plants this indicated that there would be major competition in the futiiit in the sale of atomic power stat ions on the commercial market mr bennett said he was referring to manufacturing knowhow on the construction of power stations this indicates there is going to be some distinction between scien tific information and information involving engineering design and manufacturing i dont think this is strange this is the sort t thing we must expect in the com mercial field suggests aid for africa prime minister garfield todd of southern rhodesia during a visit to ottawa and the atomic energy plant at chalk river ont sug gested to a press conference th it the commonwealth should provide aid to the new federation of rhod esia and nyasaland similar to that given south and southeastern as ia under the colombo plan it would help the new american federation raise native living stan dards and prevent possible mai mau terrorism spreading there from kenya colony the african people have awak ened he said however we are finding it difficult to provide them with the services they require and which they are demanding in no uncertain terms courting grain buyers the government is bringing in more and more wheat and flour buyers from other lands for ex tended canadian tours at canad ian wheat board cost to impress them with the size and quality ot canadas grain production ana handling facilities the program s part of a federal drive to meet competition from other exporters and boost sales of canadian grain products latest to arrive were four latin american buyers from colombia equador venezuela and peru the trade department said they wili spend a month in canada makin a firsthand study of the canadian grain picture these are in addit ion to eight united kingdom millers now in western canada making a similar study the south americans are to visit ottawa winnipeg other prairie points the lakehcad and vancouv- w they also will join the brit ish millers on a flight to the north ern port of churchill to see storage and grainloading faciilties there ddt effect on fish the fisheries department is try ing to learn whether new bruns wick salmon will be permanently affected by sprays used to kill forestdestroying budworms dr j l kask chairman of the fisheries research board said the new- re search represents an expansion of tests launched two years ago into the death of young salmon follow ing forest spraying operations research done so far shows that young salmon are being killed in- new brunswick by ddt sprays wished from trees into streams and rivers he said the ddt is wished off the trees by rain which eventually makes its way into- watersinhabited by salmon the new studies are being made to determine how long water pol luted with ddt remains dangerous to salmon they slsoanftlesigrrar to determine what amount of ddt in streams and rivers are lethal dr kask said tests to determine the period water remains toxic are being made by the departments st andrews nb fishery research station young salmon have been placed in cages in waters polluted with ddt under the natural run off conditions we hdpe that these tests vil show how long the ddt affects the fish and whether this effect is temporary or permanent he said ddt is used in new brunswick and parts of eastern quebec and nova scotia to kill the budworm it is sprayed on forests by lovv- flylng airplanes to mark completion of the shell observation tower at the can adian national exhibition 50 weather balloons were releasee wed nesday morning by dominion meteorological services percy saltz- man and c w chamberlain shells sales
