up to the highway clear school in 59 seconds the public school was cleared in 90 seconds wednesdav morning when acton firemen staged a sur prise drill during fire prevention week children were oat or their classrooms in the old high tchool old public school and the new w ing in remarkably good time accord- ins to chief sam tennant the firemen inspected the school and found fire fighting equipment theory killed thursday in truck crash keith aery of waterdovvn who narrow lj escaped death at the rock wood level crossing last momh was killed when his truck crash ed into a tree on the hamilton- guelph highwa- last thursday his milk truck wear out of control about a mile south of the ontario agricultural college property mr aver was the driver of the truck that was struck bj a c n r train at committee set up to re view the possibility of establishing three high school area boards totaka the place of the north halton high school area appointees to the fact finding committee are to be named at the november meeting the discussion arose as represents- tives from both the northern town ships objected to the resolution pre sented by georgetown asking that such a committee be established becoming too cumbersome reeve allen arg that georg town felt the north halton high school area was becoming too cum bersome i think the board has served a useful purpose but with the rapid growth in the towns and suburbs it will soon require larger schools and one board is too unwieldy for this purpose he said f c atkinson deputy reeve of burlmgtorr said similar problems existed in the areas to the south and thought the committee should have powers to review high school areas in the whole county this is rather sudden ahd it is something we do not know about i think this should be set over an other month so my council may con sider it reeve wilfred bird said adding his township was the largest contributor and should be given ad ded tune to think about the prob lem acton against committee during the week by the night school committee made the holding of certain classes final and the cancelling of others definite the committee met tuesday evening in the high school making further ac ton charged with driving vvhie ability was impaired was convicted as charged and fined 50 and costs in addition to three months sus pension of his drivers and owner ship permit four witnesses were called in connection with this charge the court heard of alleged use of abus ive language evidence of a fist fight statements about a birthdav party m georgetown prior to the offense and conflicting stones of one car trying to cut off another prior to the altercation j counsel for the accused maintain ed the reported driving actions of i the youth were not necessarilt i caused by intoxication but were i actions consistent w ith the purpose apparently in mind to bring a second car to a halt magistrate k langdon however upheld the ev- lderce submitted by constable d cook that the accused was intox icated w hen apprehended careless driving conviction another district youth was fined 1 550 and costs plus three months 1 suspension of drivers permit when conv iction w as registered on a charge of careless driving this charge arose in connection with an accident on main st s september it when the occupants of a- cat were injured after the vehicle left the road hit a railing bounced to the other side into a line pole charges of impaired driving and careless driving against a district man were remanded a week after mutual consent of crown and de fense counsel three acton men were jointly charged with theft of a keg of nails and five bags of cement from the lakeview subdivision all three pleaded guilty and said restitution had been made they also claimed the offences had occurred while all were drunk and termed the action as just foolishness the court termed the matter serious however and stated after registering conviction that much building was taking place in the area and a penalty in this case might serve as a detterent against commission of similar offences all three were fined 50 each one of the three men had another charge of keeping jiquor in an un lawful place dismissed he told the court his truck where local police found a bottle of wine was his place of residence since he recent ly lost his apartment he slept in the truck at night he said a minor from this district charg ed here with unlawful possession of liquor was fined 100 and costs the mother of the boy asked the court if he might be put on pro bation and bound to good conduct instead of the fine she blamed bad companions for the trouble he was in the 18yearold youth said he would rather take the fine and added that since he dd not have the money he would take the jail sentence in default his mother of fered to pay the fine she was told that since the bo was over 16 the court could not bind him to good conduct in lieu of the fine when he did not wish probation an acton man pleaded guilty to four charges of cashing family al lowance cheques to which he was not entitled the regional director for family allowances appeared to testify for counsel for the crown k y dick who emphasized the seriousness of this charge since the cashed cheques put taxpayers mon ey to use for which it was not in tended and also deprived some child of the benefits of the allow ance the court agreed with the crowns contention fines of 90 and costs on each charge were imposed 300 trampoline project- for gray the royal star gray club are hoping to buy a 300 trampoline for the ymca the club fox estimated cost for building a staff house to provide 14 additional beds at halton centennial manor is set at 100000 members approved the board of governors plans and are now seeking the approval of the provincial department of welfare to proceed with the plans the pro vincial share of the cost is 50 per cent it was explained reeve mar tin explained that the staff now re siding in the present building would be transferred to the new buildings this would provide the additional room in the building for 14 persons sewing classes elementary ad vanced and childrens would have to be divided into course george bowman of acton has the class in leather carving mrs icel and of this district returns to teach aluminum tray etching oil painting and millinery class es will be held on monday even ings and all the other courses on tuesday evenings it was decided letters would be sent to everyone who enrolled pointing out the date of the first class registration takes place on monday october 31 and
