scotland last month t one aik delegate from ont ario the acton woman joined with 1 100 other delegate at oil conference representing 30 oth er countries the exciting and memorable month stay was crammed with tfuslnesa sessions tours and many unforgettable moments and experiences since ber return to acton mrs somerville has prepared es peclally for thefree press her own story of iheimontr lung vis it not only to vie conference but highlights of her visits to wales iiehmd amsterdam par- 1 and many other places the following is the slory as tpld by mrs somerville i have bcn asked tagiva a stuiy- of some of my experiences and ini presslons of my trip to the assoc iated country women of the world conference including some extracts from their speeches spon sored by the federated women institute of ontario and with the bo ac this trip was arranged for 14 delegates to the ac ww ml edinburgh as well an 16 days in ireland wales and the continent i the ac ww is an organization represented by groups from 34 countries of the world our host esses were the scott lih woimm rural institutes and their task wan a gigantic one over 1 100 women registered at this conference of flcial bidges wcie piescntcd lo each on registering and were worn thr mghout iho tonfircnce period these were a means of idcntlflc alum at meetings social events excursions receptions and beat ing jlctrcat even in restaurants and slioppmgrwo noticed courteay ind preference by all we were bll iclcd in hotel and university hos- ttlfl as well ai many private homes opening ceremony the opening ceremony was held in usher hall which has a very large platform and a large audit or i urn wltli lftry a profusion f flowers ws seen hrerjrwhere the first moment of real drama came at the beginning of the open ing ccicmohy when the flags of 30 ctuntries were carried in solemn proeewnnn by lartan skirted hsses onlo the plaifarm of usher hall this was only ont pirt of thi multicolored jeene for many of ihi deltgatls had worn their national c istumc for this ceremony the eastern delegates arc relied upon lo give color but they wen rivil led by miny of the europcin visit ors in gay woven jirti marched whiti blouses and the loveliest of iicn ind lawn decorations on their lj heads fi with the opening words of the chiirman mrs e shann president of lhc scottish women s runl in rlitutcs we want you to know how happy we arc to have yu here c scots love making friends the conference was off o n good start wetcomed by speakers bnlic e jamicson who spoke fr the lord provost said ntilh ing but good can come of a con fenncc such as this lord forb es minister of slate for scotland welcomed them on behalf of the government he told the overseas visitors of some of the work which the scottish women- rural instil utes were doing i can assure jou he said their views arc listened io with respect by lhe authorities concerned long before your conference draws lo a close you will have learned that no mat tcr what country it jour home land country women the world over arc very much alike in their aims ideals and ways of life we must remember that one thing and in that way w will be making a big
