tjfyt uwft k fun fund dfcndd vote confidence in 65 warden spending on travel enter tainment and convention ex- atenses by the 1965 halton county council was defended on monday afternoon at a spec ial meeting of county council alleged overspending on tra vel entertainment and conven tions by the members of the 1965 council was noted in the county auditors report for that year during the past month however the report was released in march the al- legedoverspending has been subject to considerable criti cism in the press and by oalc- ville council which deplores- the overexpenditure lashing out at charges made by oakville mayor maclean anderson burlingtons deputy- reeve frank rogers stated the man who is making these charges is either running hot for the councillor and allowed them to keep pace with the changing times reeve gordon gallagher of burlington stated the province now recognizes that antiquat ed legislation regarding coun- s promotions is now in use e said legislation should be based on so many dollars to be spent for so many people represented he said a county with 160000 people should naturally spend more than a county with 28000 he also pointed to the fact that in 1967 all limits have been lifted due to the fact that it is cen tennial year reeve herbert merry of oak ville warden of the county in 1965 said some press reports of the alleged over spending were scandalous he said he didnt see why the blame should be pinned on the war den of that year he suggest ed maybe some conventions were overexpended but the accounts were passed by the whole council he asked that council back him up on this point deputyreeve charles mene- fy of milton made the motion backing mr merry it stated we give to reeve merry our absolute and utter vote of con fidence for his receptions and ex penses for industrial promo tion all of which are provided for under effective provincial legislation reeve william coulter of nassagaweya explained that convention expenses actually include the per diem rate which is paid to each official county delegate at a conven tion many other counties pay councillors on an annual bas is so the total for their con vention expenses naturally wouldnt be as high reeve coulter said the current meth od of paying county councillors should be revamped and he also recommended that a limit be placed on the number of conventions that any one
