ground hogs are plentiful one local hunter re ported a lone crow has return ed to tills area it was spotted between acton and george town perhaps now the greatest value of the chapleau game preserve is that it exists as a recognized political entity gov ernments in the past have not been jumping over one anoth er in a rush to set tip such vast areas in perpetuity that it is here may be the best argu- r ment for maintaining it the pros and cons of the ntiy u ha become clear value or game preserves have been argued over for tears recently the chapleau game preserve has been a topic of muchdiscussion some people question the value of the game preserve and would like to see it abolished no hunting is allowed in the the preserve except for a few animals taken by a few poach ers and some animals killed by trains most die off and are wasted no scientific studies which would suffer from the presence of hunters are pres ently being conducted why- then does the chapleau game preserve exist and why should it not be abolished at it inception the chap leau game preserve was look ed on as a reservoir of game and furbearing animals it was reasoned that as animals were depleted from the sur- rounding country others would spill out of the preserve and repopulate the- area un fortunately things just didnt work hat way any spillage was quickly absorbed into the population immediately sur rounding the preserve to be trapped shot or just die the animals followed a little bio logical law which states that in an unchanging popluation mortality must equal recruit ment the carrying capacity of the area did not increase and therefore the population did not either thus the orig inal intent of the preserve can be laid to rest to mental health experts that the conservation of natural beauty is one of our most im portant agencies for promot ing mental health and happi ness another reason put forth is one of national importance any nation is rich only as long- as its supply of resources is greater than the needs of its people after that it is not self- sustaining no nation can per manently endure when it con sumes its resources faster than nature with the help of en lightened scientific aid can re place them progress is im possible without an abundance of basic resources and we will be dangerously weakened if our resources are squandered these are reasons for con servation areas but do not ans wer the question of why they are neecjed around chapleau we are talking about con servation for am posterity and it would appear this is going to be a very large group of people the present popula tion explosion should urge us to redouble our efforts to set aside green pastures and na tural areas in perpetuity now otherwise the very size of the population that requires them wlq be the very reason why it will be impossible to get them itwould be very difficult if not impossible to establish now in southen ontario an area such as the chapleau game preserve in northern ontario the chapleau game preserve exists lets keep it may or endorses hockey week mayor lea dubythis week stated that he will keep in step with canada by support ing minor hockey weekand issued a call to every citizen to do likewise the mayor said in view of this being canadas centennial year i think it is more import ant than ever that we support those who make it possible for our
