ago probably the lineups will be start ing soort but the department seems adamant that there just wont be an extension editorial page perhaps it sounds dull and common place to suggest that one of our cen tennial projects be that of outdoor housekeeping but consider for a mo ment to saytharcanada is a beautiful country that- its urban and rural com munities its highways and its byways its vacation places and its waters have all been blessed by a bountiful nature to say these things is not to indulge a campaign to end litterbugging in canada could be one of the best of a centennial year projects and it is one in which every man woman and child could play a full part- it would be a way too for parents to impress upon their children that concern for the clean liness of their environment is one of the basic responsibilities of good citizen ship canada is a beautiful land in 1967 let us each help to make it even in cliches it is to acknowledge the truth yet how many o u through- monr beautiful ignorance or indifference mar the beauty of these riches by the careless litterbugs unite against our own way we dispose pf our litter thoughtlessness heu fa centennial two new features closely allied to centennial year begin in the free press this week added to our regular 20 50 and 75 years ago columns will be a 100 years ago column the free press wasnt in existence 100 years ago but our mil ton newspaper has files which provide a wealth of interesting facts about the whole district in those days acton was so insignificant we didnt even have a seat on county council j n 7v -siir- jolly old mr snowman is enjoying these wintry days just as much as the rest of us his hat is not so new his nose feels like a pine cone his mouth uwmt- photo by w merle ounby acts like an airplane propeller and his neckerchief isnt a very warm one but hes having fun just the same the second innovation is an old photograph on the editorial page the first of a new series if you have an interesting old photograph we would like to borrow it rephotograprr and use it in the new series it will be re turned intact we hope you enjpy the two new centennial yearfeatutes s u g a r a n d sp i personal notes about the column and the good wishes to the smileys they came from all over the continent many ol you will be getting your christmas cards at easter or possibly in julymyjivifjllost hjrjistoladiljses ft we had a refreshingly different new ycarseve tmvyear went to a skating partyon the bay we even took skates but fortunately we had to make a couple of calls before we got there and when we did the skaters were pooped i expressed great indignation before allowing someone to set me down before the fireplace with a small potion of herb tea nephew paul of lavalu appeared out of nowhere as college boys do father wants him to be a doctor he wants to be a beachcomber and hes lose his boots and his feet were soaking that kid has lost his shoes or boots over 18 years in south america the west indies holland and cape breton island but he never loses his good spirits bless him the house of commons has again begun work on the 1st session of the 27th parliament it is my opinion that the present session will probably last until easter which is late in march this year there may be a short recess and the new 2nd session will begin al most mmediately and carry on until june or july the end of this present session will probablv deal with the following i bill c231 an act in define and implement a national transportation policy for canada this deals primarily with the railway act and the past week in the house of commons has been tak en up with this matter the prairie members of parliament have been most concerned with rail line abandonments and the rates over the crows nest pass with this debate dealing with these mat ters of so much concern to the prairies i expect this bill will not pass much before the end of the month 2 bui c243 an act to amend the national defence and other acts will deal with the unification of the armed forces this is the most controversial subject on the order paper and it is enpected that the debate will be hot and heavy much has been written on this subject including in this column and it willbe again discussed after the bill is presented from the conversa tions i have had in halton the majority favor the unification of the forces 3 the mini budget will also be de bated for not more than six days which will deal with only the increase in in come tax to pay for the supplementary allowance payable to our senior citizens wilt qualify for it 4 biilc 261 to establish the can ada deposit insurance corporation which will insure bank and federally in corporated trust company savings up to a certain maximum this will insure these savings for canadian depositors 5 it is possible that motions to set up two committees will be made these will be the committee on the words for a national anthem o canada and the committee to recommend changes in the procedures- in the house of commons to promote the more effic ient and economical dispatch of the business of the nation in addition to this various small pieces of legislation will probably be dealt with if this session and as usual of course emergency legislation may be dealt with if it becomes necessary todo so centennial picture jalleri but it was a great party just aswe arrived a pretty young woman hustled in from outside clutching her pants and various other things shed been out on a skidoo on the ice and theyd gone through she was quite annoyed last time id seen her she was eight months pregnant this time she was almost in shock she said shed like to meet me under normal circumstances another feature of the party appeal ed to me instead of the usual maudlin rendition of auld lang syne followed by a round of sloppy kisses we all stood at attention and sang a maudlin version off canada speaking of centennial year some readers may have noticed a rather sar donic attitude toward this great nation- al occasion in my last couple of col umns please excuse it i dont really feel that way its a sort of backlash for years ive been trying to tell people how great canada is and could be kim had her first teenage party over the holidays she invited 18 and 27 showed up thats the way they operate nowadays she was adamant about her parents staying out of the way we did with hidden horror cordon sinclair columnisfsand tv personality and i havelittle in common hes rich jm not hes shrewd and crude pugnacious and pontifical astute and asinine i was about to say im not but on second thought wont but we are as one on the need for a holiday in feb ruary did you see him tackle the prime minister on that recently ive been shouting this theme for years its thegreatest centennial gift mr pearson could give this nation by mid- february everyone in this- country is so frayed and flogged that its amazing there arent suicides and axemurders galore 1 dont care what they call it but lets have the nearest monday to valentines day as a national holiday 5 ft cmrtamnui ttae tha free press ii run a series of old photographs taken in acton and district soma like tha one above will haw coma our way by chance it h only identified by tairy lake 1902 we would be glad to hear from anyone who can identify the bathing beauties- have you an old turnofthecentury picture to share please drop it in we will rephotograph it for our collection and return it intact but when it came time for the food she came to us hissing furiously arent you even going to cook the ham- burgers and we spent the next two hours feeling much like a couple of shortorder cooks brought in for the evening to do the catering the music was turnrd up so loud i was sure the cops would raid us kids kept wandering into the kitchen and demanding flatly got any cold pop but it was finally over we checked the living room not a burn on the piano only one hamburg with all the trim mings upset on the rug so were going to let her have another party twenty two years from now for her daughter son hugh brought us a special christmas present this year the an- nouncment that he was quitting school oh well you cant win them all but it doesnt make the goose go down any better even though you assure him that hes cooked his own and has to lie in it or whatever the saying is
