country correspondent is mrs d g rob ertson of the acton free press james a blay hydros direc tor of public relations congratulates her on her achievement at the ontario weekly newspaper association convention in toronto mrs robertson of ospringe has been a free press correspondent for 34 years she also writes for the erin advocate and the guelph daily mercury at the annual meeting in the legion hall tuesday of last weak members of lakeside chapter of the lojde heard reports which indicated a suc cessful and interesting year- the secretarys full report follows the rooowtng is a summary of records for the 48th year of lakeside chapter iode which i present to you the members for approval during the year the chapter held ten regular meetings in the legion auditorium and two executive meetings with a tot al membership of 42 members including four outoftown members the average attend ance was 20 at the beginning of the year our program committee drew up a schedule for the year which included guest speakers films talent table a court whist party and two pot luck suppers a christmas party was held following the decem ber business meeting the duke of devonshire chapter and golden age club certificate 100 cheque given top rural correspondent of year presented with a certificate and cheque for s100 at the weekly newspapers conven tion in toronto lust friday chumpion rural correspondent mrs d g robertson or os- pringe stepped to the head tuble microphone to express her thunks in words so apt they brought the unusual in terruption ol applause 1 think theres something in a weekly paper that is homey und iriendly that we dont get in our duily pupers with their sensudonulism you have to come buik to the weekly for common and sensible living she declared us the several hundred newspaper people broke into spontaneous clap ping it was difficult tu compre hend the honor ut lirst mrs robertson said us she went on to express her gratitude to the onlai 10 weekly newspap ers association und to my iriends ut the free press who urc currying on un old lumily tradition she concluded on a humor ous note leaving the editors laughing and applauding her awards were presented by jim blay director of public relations of ontario hydro who makes the award annual ly he outlined for the lunch eon audience mrs robertsons 34 years of writing encourag ed by her motherinlaw her church and institute interests she has an ideal base to obtain her leads mr blay commented as he told of the new robertson store at os- pnngc it is with great pleasuie i make this presentation to a ludy who gives unselfishly of her time and talent that she has served her r w is evidenced bytier selection as this years country correspond ent the annual convention was held at the royal york hotel toronto last thursday fri day and saturday attending trom pil printing w mrs g a uiiis mr andmrs dave ha members appeared in old fashioned costumes there were 40 certificates presented for ontario newspa pers which have been establish ed for 100 years or more the acton paper falls short by eight years but the milton can adian champion received one the milton weekly was estab lished 107 years ago acton and milton papers do not enter ontario competitions but have won a series of can adian weekly newspapers as sociation awards at national conventions were invited to join with us for o september meeting when we were privileged to have mrs a k garton liai son officer for ontario for th e canadian arthritis and rheu matism society speak to us and show a film on the study treatment and research of these diseases in october we sponsored an h ejc cooking school mrs beth gilroy home economist demonstrated the convenience speed and economy of cooking with small electrical applianc es misses judy dwver and peggy wheeler favored the aud- jenee with accordion duets our annual bazaar and tea were held on the last saturday afternoon in november and the event was most success ful we are selling centennial spoons in honor of canadas birthday as well as greeting cards for every occasion exhibits were entered in ac ton fall fair and this proved to add interest for us all and was financially successful an acton high school ex change teacher miss rosemary high spoke to our chapter in may she explained the english school system and other as pects of life in england in june after our picnic sup per we were honored to have two guest speakers miss es ther taylor spoke on the ac ton library from its origin in 1889 until the present time when a new centennial lib rary is being built mr allan rowan legge re gional director of expo inter ested all in attending expo 67 by his slides of the buildings in the process of being built and pictures of the island where the worlds fair is to beheld in november members en joyed movies of mr alf longs two safaris in africa the pic tures were beautifully colored and his comments most inter esting on decoration day in june and remembrance day in nov ember members paraded and attended services the regent placed a wreath at the ceno taph in november and mem bers planted geraniums at the graves of veterans and former lakeside chapter members in the local cemeteries on decor ation day in april members attended a hob week service in knox presbyterian church in a body two 25ear pins were pres ented to lakeside members during the year the regent mrs c e nelles attended the national conven tion in montreal in may as our delegate canvassers members of the chapter assisted with the march of dimes the can cer drive blood donor clinic c n ib canvass as well as the tuberculosis surveyand clinic a bus was hired to accom modate members and friends who went to guelph to see photoscenic canada in john f ross collegiate in march during the past year the chapter endeavored to fulfil its many obligations as a mem ber of the national organizat ion and as a part of the com munity nationally it contnbuted to the following funds- common wealth relations wilhelmina gordon scholarship national shippingoverseas relief fund i o d e canadian centenary and korean projects and peace garden fund provincially the chapter con tributed to the lucy morrison memorial fund services at the tee canadian legion and the poppy fund educationally the chapter awarded rings o the best all- round boy and girl of acton district hlah school of grade 12 thirtytwo neverlate never- absent certificates were pres- sented to high school students and a s25 scholarship to a high school student from grade 12 who is continuing his studies fifty two canadian flags one for each classroom were presented to m z bennett and robert little public schools and acton district high school also a standard for the high school auditorium formal ce remonies were held at each school and members of the chapter presented the flags to students representing each- room a member of the united nat ions club from acton district high school was sponsored to attend the u n seminar at wa- terloo in june at our october meeting neil anderson gave an interesting report on his stav at the seminar get well cards and flowers were sent to the sick or shut- in members and floral tributes were sent to the bereaved fam ilies and a donation to the heart fund the services at home and abroad committee sent a bale of 135 articles valued at ji7i to headquarters this bale in cluded 13 quilts two mattress es 57 hospital gowns not in bale and rnanv other articles pocket editions were sent dir ect to the armed services in germany new officers of the duke of devonshire chapter of the io de were announced at their meeting tuesdayof last week honorary regent mrs bert mowat past regent mrs h r fprce regent mrs e w ud- kea second viceregent flower and gift convener mrs a e newton secretary mrs gordon john ston treasurer mrs william mcleod educational secretary mrs j a reed assistant mrs bert mowat services at home and abroad mrs m f holmes standard bearer mrs j rol christmas hampers were sent to the needv in acton with the cooperation of acton ratarv club and the ys mens club three meals for christ mas dav were included with used clothing and tovs we with to thank our regent mrs c e nelles and our ex ecutive for their untiring ef forts on behalf of the chapter during the vear and also all those who willinglv assisted in projects programs and helped in anv wav to make this vear such a successful one as ioval members of the lakeside chapter i o d e mav we begin the new vear stimul ated with renewed interest in the ideals of the order and work for the
