12 the acton rtse pran rain halts program after a roaring success in fridays mckoff nassagaweya stepped into day two of the gala centennial celebrations with a parade and ethnic danc ing in the afternoon and a var iety show in the evening al though i the latter half of the evenings variety show was called off due to rain the greatest part or the program was conducted under clear skies the parade was highlighted by antique cars several centen nial theme floats one a water mill depicted the history of eden mills and another school house complete with desks and children which stood out among the many excellent floats i the loma scots brass sana headed the long procession ar ound the track at mohawk raceway followed by the cen tennial queen susan commons and her court in a convertible the giant birthday cake fow lowel the queen mohawk trailer sales enter ed a float mounted by several indians and it attracted much attention as did the currie- ville go line from rockhaven corners doreens general store milnes sunoco and in- glis transportation all had miscellaneous float entries in the parade as did christie and woods and crawford lumber officials including warden bill coulter halton judge alan b sprague milton mayor sid ney childs oyeanold brtty mclennan and 90yearold ab- by anderson were seated in rig drawn by horses school children rode their decorated bikes in the parade there were plenty of horses and buggies antique farm machines and clowns shortly after the conclusion of the parade the spotlight turned to the ethnic dancers the dance program portrayed several dances typical of the vnrlous nationalities the participants were the heather belles the royal cite squares dancers from the butler academy and from the joan waters and jeanne ander son schools of dancing sonja agnew margo clarkson and joan waters each danced solos deputyreeve william hoey was the master of ceremonies for saturday afternoons pro gram although the dancers per formed continually the d program was slightly marred by light offandon rain show ers in the late afternoon the st john ambulance brk gade from milton was on hand to assist anyone who needed first aid throughout the week end qelebrations the only inci dent requiring first aid was for an indian who fell off hla float although he was not ser iously injured his foot needed some attention the evenings program was highlighted by choirs front compbellvlue and brookville public schools a sing song headed by the campbellville womens institute magic tricks by dr frank mitchell of eden mills skits by eden mills cubs and scouts and presentation of silver dollars to the public school students who attained gold crest standing in the cen tennial commission athletic program within the schools to attorn a gold crest the indhridu- als had to pass a physical edu cation test handed down by the department of education rain made the remainder of the program impossible to con tinue outdoors just after mar- got clarkson finished her vocal solo art gibson was master of ceremonies at the variety show when ttie co found themselves unable to carry the show on outside in the rain and without a pa system in side improvision became nec essary the siren on the st jphn ambulance was sounded to attract the crowd and queen susan commons pre sented silver dollars to the schiol children janet and judy ferrier were slated to sing this land is your land after the intermis sion when it became obvious this could not be done they climbed up onto the stage and sang their song without a mic rophone or pa system the girls said they did not want to come out without getting to sing at least otic song it was planned that after the intermission sonya ag- new margot clarkson susan martin and karen ricketts would do the charleston and laurene rennick would play n aciordlon solo other perfor mers scheduled to go on were the campbellville girl guide directed by dagmar von cube and mrs j baynton margaret- slaven doing a scottish dance and two skits the first was women of the past and fu ture written and directed by mrs joyce beaton and the sec ond entitled i am a cana dian was to be narrated by rev d nicholson ind direct ed by joyce beaton the rained out portion of the program has been rescheduled for the fall when brookville schools newest addition will be opened at mookvuu park on sunday rev r p celebrations were betty mcdougall of rockwood and nlrs linda pyatt of moffat miss mcdougall made both dresses staff photo pick queen on friday a crowd of close to 1000 people a company of talented entertainers and the naming of the queen of nassagaweya centennial all added to the ex citement as nassagaweya wit nessed the kickof f of their cen tennial celebrations friday four local gogo dancers dawn stuart and brenda berry of milton and mickey and laura goutouski of nassaga weya a local rock and roll band j c and the squires folk singers judy and janet ferrier the haltonettes trio and guitar ist ron colling and his singing accompanist susan gudgeon provided a well rounded and entertaining program terry doyle was the master of cere monies the lrug and shimmy pre vail otitside while the older set moved inside for square and round dancing to the sound of an old time orchestra each of the girls in the nassagaweya queen contest made short speeches telling why they are proud to be a canadian judges were halton sheriff andrew frank mo hawk raceway building super intendent and val borrow li brarian at university of guelph of the six entrants susan commons an attractive and amiable brown eyed brunette emerged as queen with faye mathics andmary dennis her princesses susan who hopes to become a registered nurses assistant in the armed forces next october has sung in the st georges choir since she was seven years old and has been a member of the girls auxiliary at st georges church in lowville and a mem ber of the careers club at mil ton district high school in past years the queen wore a centennial gown with a floral pattern that her mother had made and red slippers over her gown susan wore a scarlet regal robe and tiara by the end of the threeday cele brations it was a tired but happy voung lady who reigned as queen of nassagaweya not long after the naming of the queen and her court the giant cake drawn by a tractor entered the hall the four go- go girls were sealed on the back of the cake and the queen and her princesses were in the front as they drove about the hall the company of perform ers led the audience in the singing of happy birthday canada and o canada it was a moving and touching spectacle to see close to 1000 canadians singing and show ing the nationalistic pnde that is so often hidden in canadian characteristics and to see the huge centennial cake and the prcttv girls on it the crowd danced inside and out and revelled in the exciting festive atmosphere until well afer midnight the manufacturing of the giant centennial cake is indica tive of the dedicated workman ship put into the planning and execution of the gala affair charlie macarthur and gordon townships triple project reeve william coulter of campbellville crowns susan commons of campbellville as miss nassagaweya centennial queen her princesses are faye mathies on the left and mary dennis right fstaff photo open dedicate parks solemn services of dedicat ion at the brookville eden mills and campbellville ball parks on sunday afternoon brought a fitting close to nas sagaweya townships event- filled centennial celebrations weekend simultaneous services of de dication were held at the new cairns in campbellville and eden mills park at 2j0 pjn then over 400 residents of the township joined together for an outdoor community church service dedication of the park and picnic at brookville at s pm the brookville ball park is a new park adjacent to the township administration build ing on the guelph line im provements at the existing ball park in eden mills included washrooms water facilities and shrubs while at campbell ville bleachers and four large pieces of playground equip ment were added at the vil lage ball park the project cost 17200 with federal prov incial and township govern- j ments sharing the cost at one- third each the cairns were granite field stones at campbellville and brookville and a field stone cairn at eden mills was con structed by local craftsman wilk wilson each bore a cen tennial plaque indicating the name moh a new medical officer of health will be engaged this week for the county of hal ton it was learned today councils personnel commit tee and the board of health chairman earlier this week in terviewed four of the appli cants for the advertised posi tion a selection has been made and the appointment of the new m o h is expected to be confirmed on thursday parks were completed in rec ognition of canadas centen nial year rev w lestnatt and rev d sinclair conducted the dedica tion at eden mills and deputy aeeve william hoey and coun cillor ross gordon both spoke about the history of the park and the project to an estimate ed so in attendance at campbellville 40 gather ed to watch rev r p b jef fares handle the dedication and heard councillor ron gor don review the history of the project the brookville service fea tured a massed choir from six presbyterian anglican and un- ited churches in the township directed by j kltchlng and ac companiment for the hymns by the salvation army band from guelph under the dlrec- jion of capt r j broughton the three ministers partici pated in the service and rev david nicholson of campbcll- vllia gave the sermon reeve william coulter read the les son and dedicated the brook ville park centennial project the offering was contributed to the north west halton vol untary services organization at the conclusion all sang the national anthem and o canada afterward the ladles served hot and cold drinks a planned outdoor picnic was cancelled due to the high flowers decorative rope cand les and silver paper were used in the construction the cake took eight men to lift it and there was 70 pounds of gyptex to serve as icing decorations for an occasions
