november rolls around adventure at expo delights 35 robert little students sr miss donna msibomigh to thlrtynv robart uttlt studtnts we attended expo 67 on th mtfttad of october 1316 found tntir experience thoroughly xardlng both in terms of their dncatlon and the shear thrilling adventure of it cruising along the uacdonald- carticr freeway in their com fortable tyler transport coach the opportunity to enjoy the col ours of autumn at their magnifi cent best was not lost ton the delighted youngsters mr ted tyler jr who drove the bus and conducted the trip stopped at one of the spacious service centres for the noon meal later in the afternoon he stopped again at upper canada village and allowed sufficient time for the students to exper ience this anlojue presentation of car history what was their de lighted surprise whaa at expo the next day they again found themselves la the streets of the same quaint reconstruction of our past by means of that ver itable miracle that was the film in the bell telephone building it was a thrill just to arrive in montreal and feel its bigness and its fascination by about seven oclock in the evening mr tyler was deposit ing his passengers in the mont real hostel their lodgings only a mile and a half from the expo site he soon took them all down to the nearby restaurant be had recommended this was a place which served good food at rea sonable prices and at which our group ate their breakfasts and evening meals on the weekend after supper while the young sters were unpacking and making up their bunk beds mr tyler got the five adult chaperones to gether and spent some time in outlining what he recommended would be the bast general plan by which the most might be seen in the time available this help was invaluable to the groups on the following days on their saturday and sunday forays they all did manage tosee some of the more outstanding pavilions such as the theme pav ilions canadtanoavllion ontario pavilion and rite bell telephone building then each group saw many others as it made its own way about not until after six oclock on sunday evening did they go near la ronde where they participat ed in various amusements until about nine oclock they left at ten oclock the next morning to return home and bless their hearts most of the kids slept quite a bit that day lor the weekend had certainly kept them going and constantly on their feet the generous help of several persons gave the students the opportunity to profit from this enriching experience mr cope- land initially organised the stu dents for theproject and tney greatly appreciated bis work on their return theypresented him with a gift of cuff links with engraved expo insignia the students appreciated the financial assistance given the chaperones the leadership su pervision and understanding of the chaperones contributed greatly to the success of the ex pedition on their return the students sent thankyou cards to their several chaperones mrs bern van fleet mrs herbert couett mrs kerwin mcphall miss donna riseborough and g w mckentle not least was mr tylers con tribution to the trip he so eas ily took firm and friendly charge of his youthful load of passengers that they enjoyed themselvos im mensely with the many changes in the educational field and the exper ience gained in organising and conducting an educational tour it is felt trot the students should become involved in many more field trips in the future l harley to halton harry harley m p in the past week a good deal of time has been spent on setting up the new department of corporate and consumer affairs under the registrargeneral the honour able john turner this does not mean another government de partment but a change and anex- tenslon of a previous one under canadian constitution no single level of government has control over all the matters in which consumers are interested for example the federal gov ernment has just made regula tions that all banks must give to the borrower of money the total charges interest and any other charges that the borrower will have to repay there are also many areas in which both the federal and provincial govern ments have control in closely related fields in the field of food and drugs for example most provinces have regulations concerning milk and farm produce and over the re- tall sale of food and drugs while the federal government has con trol over the manufacturing im porting and distribution of drugs the goals of tbe department of corporate and consumer aff airs may be summarixed as follows 1 full protection for the con sumer against fraud decep tion and unfair trade pract ices 2 maximum standards of qual ity safety and protection in the services and goods 3 provision of full and accurate information on which to base purchases 4 give the consumer active re presentation in tbe cabinet and government 5 a consumers representative will be involved in any de cision affecting all consumer interests in addition the department will enforce tbe existing legislation and if necessary initiate new leg islation it will distribute the best information available on matters of consumer concern and do research into market pro blems it will investigate con sumer complaints brought to their attention it is expected that the first duty of tbe new department will be to amend the trade harks and patents act to allow more competition in the drug industry which is designed to lower the cost of drugs lions write to mp protest station closing set public skating price one acton service club the lions has written to dr harry harley mp protestingthe clos ing of the cjjr station following is the text of the letter as chairman of the acton lions club civic improvement committee i have been asked to write you on behalf of the club to express our grave concern regarding the closing of the cn r station in acton the mem bers of our club have always striven for community better ment and are convinced the loss of this facility would be a retro gressive step while we respect the railroads desire to trim unprofitable facets of its operation we also feel the railroads actions here over the past several years are partly responsible for the loss of bus iness passenger service from acton is practically nil because most of the trains go right through without stopping acton is in a very envious position because of its proximity to the large markets of the metro area thanks to tbe fore- ukmgh of a past council a tract of industrial land was obtained before land skyrocketed and is available to industries wishing to locate here these advantages arc aoaatwhat diminished by the loss of rail facilities we weald also point out that wttls eaatrattaed service from oaefefc assy be mora expedient for the railroad the cost of truck pickup in acton for de livery to the station in guelph is much higher i think that from tbe erpertence of other stations that have been closed these empty buildings in variably become targets for van dalism and a source of annoyance to the police i am sure you need no urging from us to put forth a protest to tbe railroad commissions in the strongest terms bearing in mind that whether we have a railroad station or not we as canadian taxpayers will continue to share in paying the cnh deficit thanking you i remain yours truly neil r miller soccer continued from page 4 so as
