transport is not taking any chan ces the department is initiat ing an air traffic control service to reduce to reduce the likeli hood of collisions over or around major airports the service which will event ually be spread through out the country will be initiated in an area centred about toronto air port the service is aimed at light or private flying aircraft at present many of the aircraft are flying visual flying rules vfr that is the aircraft can be seen on air traffic control radar but communication is not possible the ultimate purpose of the program is to integrate visual flying rules with instrument fly ing rules ifr aircraft receive directions from the controller on the ground by ifr burlington skyway mohawk raceway acton orangeville aurora markham and fairport beach have been cited as geo graphical fixes each of these sites will have controllers who act as policemen for the skies and advise aircraft if they are about to overtake a second air craft or if they are near another plane the system is being initiated at toronto because of the in creased number of near misses that have occurred recently a near miss is hard to define as some pilots report near misses as anything closer than 1000 feet and others do not- aircraft movements out of toronto airport have increased from 10000 a month in 1965 to 20000 a month this year and there are about 2000 light air craft in the area from st cath arines and brantford to oshawa on january 1 all vfr air craft flying within a 20mile ra dius of toronto airport must contact the toronto airport march 1 this will be extended to a 30mile area special corridors have been allotted flying clubs near the airport at brampton maple and king city they will not have to contact the toronto terminal- last golden age club
