ms annual report to the authority last week this certainly was not the thinking of the dedicated determined people who worked so hard to make sure this authority would not fall by the way but would do everything possible to preserve and bring back many of the things man has destroyed for future generations many of those man and women have departed others are unable to be with us tonight as we meet for the last time this year we still have several of the original members with us and they must feel that their time and efforts have not been wasted mr mcmillan went on to thank the member who would not be returning next year and ib welcome any new members for only as a team have we been able to achieve the results which i am sure you should be pleased tobe a part of the credit valley conser vation authority is the envy of other organisations for the suc cess we have had and the credit jhlver is the cleanest in indus trial ontario you should be very proud that you have been a part of this authority centennial year for canada has developed into a banner year for the credit valley conservation authority tool several major projects planned over the years now are under construction and everyone is now looking forward to the second 10 years of author ity work with high hopes plan ned in 1957 the orangevlue he- servolr protect is now under eonstruciioaa this is the first flood control structure of several planned on the credit river and should be completed in 1968 when finished the reservoir will flood almost 500 acres and pro vide water storage of 624 million gallons the credit river orig inally supplied- power for many notice due to renovations at the y m c a building the town office will be closed friday at 1 pm after this date town business will be conducted at the expand its oducational program with special emphasis on children speakers are available to any group interested in conservation by simply writing or telephoning the offlco at meadowvale 451- 1615 credit river past since settlement started oarly in 1800 tho rich credit river valloy provided tho raw material for many industries lumber and brick for homes waterpower for mills and limestone which was processed for many uses some of tho best farming and gardening land in ontario is located in tho watershed this good land was taken for granted through he yoars until suddenly people began to real ize that the hillsalongtho niagara escarpmont were bare and eroded fishing was no longer a ploasure in the polluted river and in tho summor wator was almost nonexistent in parts of the credit in 1052 representatives of the 16 municipalities in the water shed mot to discuss the problom it was agreed that only by co operation could flood control re forestation and preservation of the whole valloy bo carried out in ifay 1954 the credit valley conservation authority was formed created by the ontario government at the request of these municipalities the authority along wilh the ontariogovorn- ment tho towns of aclon brampton georgetown oakvllle orangevlue stroetsvllle and port credit the village of erin and the townships of amaranth caledon chinguacousy erin estjuesing garafraxaeast uono halton peel trust 6 savings company and toronto are members the authority covers parts of the countlos of peel hilton diif- ferln and wellington a per capita levy based on the population of the watershed now about 125000 plus provincial grants makes up the working capital of the credit valley con servation authority five advisory boards made up of members of the authority and interested individuals divide the work of the cvca these are flood and pollution control parka and recreation reforestation land use and wildlife historical records information and educa tion robert r parker is chair man of flood control jw paw- ley parks and recreation jh bailey reforestation land use c king historical hecords au greenaway information and ed ucation these five chairmen with authority chairman rk ucuillan and vice chairman e u white make up the executive committee of the cvca the credit river is rich in history of early ontario this was until recently largely only a matter of keeping records because the budget could not be stretched to include projects which were of strictly historical value in 1965 the credit valley con servation authority foundation was formed this is a chartered foundation and as such is able to accept gifts of money land or items of value for preser vation it is hoped that interested people will contribute towarov preservlng the history o the valley for years to come con tributions from a firm in to ronto bought the former union school section 15 erin and east garafraxa townships this school was built in 1900 and many of the people still living in the aroa went to school there the school is full of books and equipment collected by robert f hardy chairman of the found ation these desks books maps and teachers guides from the past will show the present and future generations bow many of the famous and lnfamousof this area were educated future aims originally the credit river survey submitted by the ontario government suggeslkit of darnealoog tho river for wator storage and to prevent disaster- ous floods it is the aim of the- authorlty to lmploment those plans as funds bocomo available now that die first dam is under way thoughts turn to the next set of problems to be facei flood control protects sre of major lmportanand will take the greater portion of tho bud get for some time to come the showcases of tho authority are its mulljpieuso conservation areas used not only for recrea tion but to make the public aware of the various phases of conser vation as it pertains to he in dividual these areas are located at terra cotta bolfountain and tho new manors conservation area just north of orangovlllo on highway 10 this last named is a joint project of the town of orangevllle township of uono and the cvca last year the authority acquired almost 200 acres at umehouso east of acton and this will be developed in the future although not strictly a recrea tion area the cvca farm at hillsburgh will show the general public both modern farming methods and farming as it was done before the turn of the century tho moadowvaie con servation area 118 acres wind- lng along tho river at meadow- vale will also be developed in the future much of tho northern second soction itwviyisrwftnral wildlifo aroa and will be kopt as such the colonial house on the pro- porly built originally inl830 has boon prosorved on tho outside tho lnsldo has boon rebuilt to form offices for chairman mc millan secretarytreasurer g w bentloy superintendent nj ucmahon and field officer s b white those offices replaced tho original headquarters at ter- ra cotta the cvca owns over 2000 acres of land in the water- shod much of it covered with trees much of tho marginal land in the valley is of ho use for anything else and the authority conducts an annual treeplanting program the aim of the program is to help the private landowner plant marginal acres thus pre venting oroslon and quick run off in tho spring ah these aims of the authority all the work that has gone into getting as far as the cvca has over the past 12 years has gone for nothing if the future members of mun icipal provincial and federal govornmentsthe schoolchildren of today do not loam a healthy respect for their groon areas those young people are in terested and the credit valley conservation authority intends to promote this interest so that future legislation will not undo all tho accomplishments completed this far ys men donate 600 to assist y program the ys mens club made a donation of 600 to assist tho ymca board in the operation of heir program tho motion to make the donation passod un- anlmously at the regular ys mens meeting thursday jan 11 in the y with president gary bate man in the chair elmer smith reported on pro jects during december which showed
