they give eery indication 6f it then ihetaxr payer winds op paying more when theres a delay on improvements and repairs- council is sensitive to public opinion when it comes to raising the mill rate and who can blame them unlike the largo metropolitan cen tres where joe bloe hesitates to accost his alderman or councillor the small town councillor knows hell meet a knowledgeable ratepayer on the with councillor drinkwallors ob servation that it is long overdue it would take a much larger amount to compensate for all the extras involvj od in municipal work thoso days frictfoh mt unique disturbed by the friction between council and school board over the rising cost of education dont bo its not unique or confined to acton milton georgetown and fergus are also feeling the pinch milton council sent both the high school and public school budgets back to the rcspoctive boards with requests for thorn to chop off 35000 and 10000 tho alterna tive was an eight to nino mill tax in crease fergus council sont a request from the centre wellington district high school for a 141 mill incrosso back to the board requesting it be cut consid erably the increase a whopping 145394 over last year would have meant an extra 50 for tho average tax bill georgetown public school board meanwhile is attaching a largo sharo of the blame for delay in construction cost on their own council tho board can forsee staggered classes at the schools as a result of delay here in acton of course council asked tho public school board to cut 30000 off their budget but it was rofused tho board said it had already trimmed tho requisition down to a size smaller than their actual needs increas ed cost of instruction was blamed for tho almost five mill increase over last yoar in order to save the taxpayer money and in lino with the policy of the on tario municipal board council here cut ihoir own general purpose budget theyvo actually only got control of 30 mills of tho budget struck at 78 the rost is controlled by school boards and the county the thing to remember is school boards are caught in the lame squeeze as council theyre concorned too whats the- answer to keeping edu cational standards high and costs down its a problem which noods much thought and certainly no slick solution exists until if is worked out therell continue too friction botween tho new county school boards and town councils tmcum ktyktoaif hazard farm tractors woro involvod in 246 accidents with motor vehiclos in 1967 according to statistics roloasod by tho ontario department of transport hal wright provincial farm safety specialist with tho ontario dopartmont of agriculture and food nolos that many of thoso accidents might havo boon prevented if tho triangular slow moving vohiclo signs had boon used by the farm tractor oporators tho statistics show that seven farm tractor oporators woro killed and 48 were injured while throo persons in motor vohiclos were killed and 90 woro injured total proporty damages was more than 210000 most of the accidents wore appar ently caused by carolossness or lack of courtesy onthopartof the farm tractor oporators since twothirds of all the chargos laid by investigating polico of ficers wore made against tho tractor oporators as thoso statistics indicate farmers should exorcise extra care when on the road with farm oquipment mixing with fastor moving car traffic creates a haz ard which farmors can minimize by tak ing adequate precautions and using slow moving vehicle signs phttta fretn the past bmtmr staw of the acton free press was photographed leadership con vention has already beon written but its spring almost and we have a new prime minister almost theyre both pretty green but summer usually follows no i didnt bet against trudoau but i cant see guy called winters evorwlnnlng an election in tills country wo got onough of that nonsense about eight months of the year as an english teacher i always look at names for symbolic suggestions winters has already been dealt with hellyor sounds slightly uko hell with yer ill do as i please paul martin i think a martin is a small bird and he sure got it from the eagles and falcons but ho was a gamo bird des pite the fact and doservos a salute for dignity and courage i mot martin years ago encumbered by a couple of plastered liberals from the sticks and he had the same dignity then theso aro the people who let him down after hed made gruelling trips to hayfork centre to speak for some local jerk turner didnt live up to his name tough no turning watch out for him in future ho wants it all or nothing maceachon was a disappointment hes a man of intelligence and integrity but he ran his campaign as though he wore running for reeve of juniper junction and even made a bollix of withdrawing from the race a pity joe greene is joe greene ive seen hi m in action before a dangerous orator of the old school emotional convincing but a pretty fair minister of agriculture when you penetrate the verglage sharp was sharp and always has been he made the right move at the right time and hes famous for this despite a couple of abysmal lapses during the economic crisis and etf filentif how many people realize they are ming in the richest province in canada ontario accounts for 78 per cent of canadas fully manufactured exports a survey by the provinces department of economics and development has reveal ed fully manufactured exports from the province totalled 1803038000 in 1966 the year of the latest complete tabulations while the canadian total was 2300803000 of canadas total exports of 10- 325320000 in the same year ontario accounted for 3762722000 this in cluded 28 per cent of live animal ex ports 16- per cent of the food bover- ages and tobacco category 24 per cent of crude materials 28 per cent of fab ricated materials 41 per cent of special trade transactions as well as 78 per cant of fully manufactured exports klorans made a great fight but who really feels sorry for a millionaire whos going to wind up in the cabinet and didnt havo a ghost of a chance in tho first placo stout chap though you cant make much of trudeausname symbolically however i think hes just possibly a bettor choice than that chap called laf rambolse from northern ontario i have a vague idea laframboise means the strawberry and whore would we bo then internationally eaton with sugar and cream thats whero all i hope is that canadians wont go sour on trudoau whon the gallic shrug tho quirked eyebrow and the chimpanzees grin disappear aftor a couple of months of dealing with all the garbage a prime mini ster must put out to tho constant disgust of my wlfo and daughter i knocked j f kennody constant ly after his election i kept saying sure hes cute sure he has a beautiful grin sure he s witty suro everybody loves him except 49 percont of the us voters but hes a ruthless politician when is he going to do something- besides charm people i feel the same way about our new prime minister hos clever charming rich hes a bachelor which probably accounts for the rich and charming i wish him woll i hope he breathes into canadian politics that fresh new breeze evoryone is predicting but i wouldnt count on it most of the boys in tho press gallery touting him as the salvation of canada were saying the same about dlef ten yoars ago and theyll bo tho first to start cutting strips off him when he falls to produce immediate miracles good luck pierre elliott trudoau i think you might just do it and finally goodbye lester pearson i think you
