to country or lakeside life when the time fdr re turning to the old aurroundlngi and the old routine arrives we ore sel dom very reluctant to go our noma may be htue and the furniture shab by but wc feel that we will be glad e them again our occupation may uot be the most interesting in tho world or our success in its as tonishment yet uomehow thejaora agreeable activities of vacation tend to make us contemplate it with leu distaste and more hop and wt quite rejoice at the prospect of see ing again the faces of our friends and fellow workers wc did nut in least mind leaving them but we aware of a distinct eagerness to rejoin them perhaps the foretaste of return is sweeter than the fact our check book shows a smaller bal ance than we had intended it to show the work is as dull as ever and our friends are not half so ex cited by our kappcarance as thay might be but the disappointment is fleeting we are more alive to tha compensations of our life than we were before we broke away from the routine of it wc find in the street the shops the houses and tha crowds a stimulus to which before ilc parting from them we had ceased to respond so we gfct into our stride again we aay toouraelves after all tho old town is a pretty good place to come back to we are happy to be earning our living at the task for which wc have fitted ourselves the afterglow of the well- spent vacation is really the best part of it ball1nafad new likad hi farrn a farmer listed his farm with a real estate company a week later the firm advertised it for sale they so elaborately described the place is shown by a bullkin just issued by the labor gaxctte the average cost of a weekly family budget of twenty- nine staple foods in july this yeur was 11049 as compared with ja91 for july 1924 once again the varying year ith blade and sheaf has clothed tha happy plains and ontario and the great west echo with the hum of tha binder and soon the golden grain will be pouring from the separator and bring golden prosperity to farm er merchant and countless other toilers throughout our wonderful dominion and all this fa a sign that the fall season of the year is inevitably drawing in upon us and with the fall comes its perennial her ald the fall fair soma people are rather apt to belittle tha small town fair to question its value and utility but it has been emphatically recognized by the legislators of our provinces that in the small life of the country it creates and stimu lates new interests amongst our ag riculturalists it gives an incentive to wards careful and intensive cultiva tion of the kindly fruits of tha earth and it offers in smaller or greater degrees monetary rewards for care and industry in this line of work how often it happens that the winning of a pake at the small town fair encourages a man to per severe and some day find himself a winner in that greatest of all fairs the canadian national exhibition at toronto then again the falll fan- is aa a rule an event eagerly looked forward to by the community at large it gives an opportunity for one more days open air enjoyment before the rigors of winter set in it provides as a rule the young ele ment with some sporting interest or another baseball racing or what not it gives us an opportunity of seeing the results of the work and in dustry of others and in countless indescribable ways bring town and country closer together showing us how dependent after all we are upon those who toil at the monotonous task as it sometimes seems of cul tivating the land yes the fall fair has a very definite place in our scheme of existence and without it at any rate in ontario we would feel that something essential was missing from our normal seasonal routine mr and mrs w c bessey and doris of georgetown spent what i oughtermo old one suits mc mighly good never had to raise her hood parting with her seems a sin but ill have to trade her in t sunday is almost universally observed in this community as a day of cessation from our usual occu pations and amusements how it should be spent in the way of rest and recreation is left very largely to the preference of the individual many devote it to visiting their friends and kindred within certain limits and under special circum stances this is not only permissible but commendable but in any case the practice is carried to extremes and requires curbing as an exchange suggests the frequent recurrent in the items of local news from vari ous localities of the expression for the week end suggests consideration of some of the many ways in which is spent and misspent the week d habit is one which if not orig inated by the motor ear has cer tainly been greatly fostered by it and has become so wide spread as to be practically universal if turn ed to good account it may make a large contribution to social life if not it may become a menace both to morals and religion week end vis itors are most welcome as a ml when invited and shouldnt venture without consulting their hosts at least to include some of their own choos ing with the party this is what might fairly be called an abuse to hospitality nor should people nlan a surprise party for a week end visit w any of thru- friends without mak ing ery sure that they will be wel come and that it will be quite con venient for their hostess the con venience of the compulsory host doesnt matter so much the only surprne party that has any right to expert a welcome for the week end i onr on a picnic basbj self pro visioned as a week end includes sunday in whole or in part it u always proper and profitable to take that into account it shouldnt en tail extra work for those invited it is to be feared that too many are selfishly yielding to the temptation to have a laxy holiday at the ex pense of some one else week end- trs should always count on doing their full share of the extra work they necessarily make they will be more welcome if they do and are mora likely to be asked back if they ara church going people and are visit ing church going- people they will ex pect you to go to church with them if they are not and dont want to spoil their outing ihey should con fine their outinr to their own kind whatever may be your views aa to the legitimacy of pending part of the day of rest rec nationally it is in- panioaable rudeness to impose their views and customs oh their hosts
