since then it has been coming rtgularly and is very much ap preciated i certolrly en joy reading the home town news and it is good to hear of the other fellows from town who are on active service this is quite a large camp and lakes care of a large number of soldiers guorgctawr was well represented here for awhile but a lot of the boys were moved to sussex nb 50 there are only a r of us from town now the life is a great deal different to what the majority of us were accus tomd but it u a good life tor a fel ion and we are glad to be here getting reaaj to do our share wishing ou and your paper every remain yours truly spr bill ritchie a19s69 tucday october 16 1940 somewhere in england dear sir i have just finished reading the he raid punhshed september 18 which you so kindly sent i wish to take this oppenunity to thank you for bringing the georgetown news to me through your paper our battalion arrived on sept 4th we had a very oulet voyage i met three boys from georgetown on board ship but have not seen any home town boys since we are stationed in barracks in a very old army town in england in fact tha is about all the natkcs of this town knew is army we have just returned from leave and every one of the boy were high in thei praise of the hospitality of the brllhers here they jus can t do too much for the canadian soldiers the canadian legion does a great deal towards giving us free entertain ment and put on real good shows looking forward to th nett edition thanking you again yours sincerely spr carl hyde 2nd pioneer battalion rce sokuer in closing i wish to thank you again for the herald which i am always glad to receive i remain yours truly cliff hilts h16186 ppolx an excellent idea december 1st 1940 the georgetown herald dear sir may i once more ask your kindness and tolcance through the medium of your paper which by the way i hear compliments of same on all sides of me to make a public appeal to our town fathers ministers and teachers to cooperate and try to create a youth s club or in preference a ym or ywca club combined for the community of georgetown and glen williams i admired your editorial appeal a few weeks ago for a boy scout patrol and i know there are many tgcthers who would be very pleased to have our children meet to gether and enjoy the many games and exercises and other amusements that a central club of some kind would be able to provide above all would it not give most parents a little more peace of mind to know that their boys and girls had an opportunity of meettrg their equals of all classes in good clean congenial surroundings under careful guidance and supervi sion is rot this more commendable than that they should be learning to dance in cafes and public dance halls and worse still going out or town and having to come home very late caus ing parents and children to lose much needed rest in my opinion where- ever the fault may lie for the lack of nich s club it does not excuse anyone of us fo- not trying and trying until we succeed in some way to keep our children off the highways and places we ourselves would not care to go to i have a strong belief there is no sin in ufa unless we cause it and that is done by our abuse or the good things bestowed upon us so let us all do our bit in some way to help any one who will be brave enuogh to try and star such a club for the future generation of our community one again sir in anticipation of your kindness i thank you sincerely yours interested reader old chum eminnmncjnuiiuuiini niuoinnti c n r timetable standard time going east passenger 616 received three heralds out of this last mall and was very pleased to get them a persrn always ukns to see the home town paper no matter how far awuy he gete because we are all in terested to know what is going on in t hf t eve if w are a it was a little hard to get used to the weather over here when we first came las- december but now the rain is just like the sunshine to us there were five of us in this com pany all from town but now there ar only reg blair and myself capaln early is in a company and major sutherland and my old standby ed shortul are at divisional headquarters the beys that have just coma to the regiment in the last two or three months are still training but the old lads that are left get a break now and we do all the guards and the tidying up around our billet to keep it clean i really haven t seen many of the georgetown fellows as they are still borden and they scatter us around so much you never get chance to find another regiment we are in wonderful country around our btuetc and we have small towns all around us within three miles in any direction so th lads can always get a bus and go to town for an hour or so to pass the time the boys have a ping pong table in each house and two or thsee dart board and between these games and when it is decent weather to play bau and football we really spend our spare time rpostly at home we nave continuous leave now one man every day which makes it so ev ery man gets a sevenday leave every three months and the lads aire do like to get their leaves most of them either want to go to scotland or ire land and as long as the lads stay with in the laws no matter where they go the people talk well of the canadian santa claus is coming kiddles don t forget the annual lions christmas tree on saturday afternoon december 2lst presents for everyone the editors corner the penguin has wings the results of mondays voting would seem to be octte conotuatv evidence that we arent interested in municipal affairs last week to this column we urged every cttisen with a vote to turn out at the poua and exercise his franchise here is a comparison which doesn t need an explanation names on voted on voted for voters ust bylaw councillors ward 1 ward 2 ward 3 431 6m 483 27 257 441 in ward 1 twentyseven people out of a potential four hundred and thirtyone thought the matter or a double term for councillors im portant enough to vote on hi ward 3 fortynine people took the trouble to go to the public library mark an x on their ballot and drop it into the ballot box j seventysix of the nine hundred and fourteen dtugensentiued to vote in these two wards made use of this vote 8 13 in ward 2 considering weather conditions a fairly good vote waa polled in the contest for councillors four hundred and fortyone of the six hundred and fifliyfour people on the list voted for their choice we are at a loss to understand however why only two hundred and fifty seven of these thought the byjaw important enough to vote on one hundred and eightyfour people took kn interest in voting for two coun cillors and yet apparently old not care whether their men served a one- year term or a twoyear term frankly we can t understand it we are engaged in a bitter strug- glatothedeath to defend our democracy one of the most lrnportant ele of democratic theory is the right of a people to decide by free election who their leaders stapll be and how tang these leaders shall hold office that is our right and we would every one of us be most bitter if this eight were denied us and yet if we do not use this right are we not encouraging its yw into the discard tjie penguin has wings but he cannot use uiem fintmrttafa tell us trat over a period of time the penguin lost bhv use of these wings because be was too lasy to use them too late he realized that his wings could be of value are we going to be ttke the penguin are we going to realise too late that the right to vote is our precious heritage andshouldbe used a- small minority of us did use this on monday some of us voted for the twoyear terra some of us against it two hundred and three people believed it was a good thing one hundred and thirty believed sbat it was not twelve hundred and tmrtyflve dfdnt care a million worms will turn some day hiuer will be defeated by a million worms who dwto turned as we listened to these words spoken by john ooulngwood read in one of his evening news broadcasts we were struck with the truth which lay behind it the nazi doctrine has violated all those principles which have been developed over the centuries and which have come to be the accepted mode of ronduct among civilized people mercy and justice kindliness and truth have all given way before a corrupt ad perverted nazi code of ethics if such standards oould be called a code or ethics europe has become a nest of mice with a cat standing at the door way europe s little men scurry back and forth in bewildered confusion knowing that whichever way they turn they will eventually be caught meanwhile millions of europeans of all classes and creeds are on the brink of starvation an army marches on rts stomach and no less does a nation it was lack of bread which forced the french revolution a people drive to desperation by hunger revolted and all the soldiers in france could not subdue them hitler is scaling his own doom when he kicks a fallen neighbour a million worms will turn and we pray that the turning point is close at hand the whole is greater col james ballantine chief of the lions club converted a euclid axiom into a fitting motto for a club when speaking to the lions last monday evening the whole is greater than any part and equal to the sum of all the parts said euclid the club is greater than any member and equals to the sum of all the members paraphrased the colonel there is a great deal of truth in this saying and it is something which members of all clubs and organizations should take to heart tus unity there is strength and a club cannot be strong if its members are constantly bickering and putting their own petty quarrels above the lar ger interests of the club just remember this when friction alies and no chrganization ta blessed with perpetual harmony have your llttie tiffs but when tfl all over shake hands and get back into line with the others hitlers lament to be sung to the tune of my bonnie lies over the ocean
