again mr mccilvray or mac at hr i more familiarly known ha been doing n grand job during our ab sence he ha had the reiponubtlity of both editing end printing the paper one day sprit in the herald office would be enough to convince you how hectic a job that can be so publicly and through this column wed lilte to aov thanui a lot mac lets co over the top for the boys every canadian 1 aware that the curtain rote on canada third victory loan on october 19th every citizen of georgetown ii aware that our town ob jective in thi drive is 225o00mf sound like a lot of money doesnt it it i a lot of money but when we think about the tragedie which actual combat con bring into canadiun home money seem a small consideration we here in ge orgetown hud a foretaste of how horribly fust things can happen in wartime when report of the dieppe raid started coming in every home which had a man over- seas spent anxious hours wondering when word would come telling of how a loved one wai faring whether or not he hud been in the raid howoadly wounded he might be whether he had been taken prisoner or was really missing forever we all wailed und won dered on which family the blow would fall next human nature being what it is it takes something startling like the raid to bring facts home to us to know the money which we lend the government is going to pay for ammunition and cquipmrnt to end this nightmarish war and bring our boys back to nor mal peacetime life again is the greatest stimulus wc have towards putting georgetown once more over the top in the third victory loan campaign if in order to buy bonds some of us must choose between comfort and no comfort between entertain ments that cost money and entertainment that docb not between lots to eat and not so much to eat be tween new clothes and the old ones canadians will choose to do what is necessary to buy the bonds that bolster the boys have you tried it glancing out of the window at time of writing we can see the ground covered with fallen leaves they are just at the stage when they are loveliest brilliantly coloured nnd enough of them still on the trees to make a glorious canopy for the matching carpet beneath we still like to shuffle our way through great rustling piles of them when the nutting season rolls around wc wonder how many people here in town realize how delicious wild hickory nuts walnuts and butternuts can be when dried and ripened to the right degree in addition to the fun youd have gathering them there is a new angle on nutting this year storekeep ers tell us that our usual quota of christmas nuts will be even more restricted than last year so some of our canadian varieties will help round out your traditional christmas menu gathering nuts this year will be ec onomical as well as lots of fun try it and seel bumper crops good sign most of the harvest is in now and the farmers thr oughout the land are viewing with satisfaction a bum per crop of grain the dominion bureau of statistics forecasts for canada an all time record wheat yield of 651243000 bushels which is more than double the yield of 31 1 825000 bushels secured in 1941 from a larger acreage from all reports the united states and great britain have had successful crop yields as well while germany and her subjected countries are har vesting crops 1 5 to 20 per cent below normal nature eemt to be on our aide during the last war malnutrit ion was a large contributing factor to the breakdown id german morale we may take it as a good sign that itafure hiu been so bountiful to us this year ituuiujj of your fuel per ton most householders could use at least 500 lbs per ton of pea coal and many could use 1 000 lbs to advantage pea size is the only size of which there is an abundance we would ask
