the georgetown herald wednesday october 3 1945 the editors corner fire prevention week h by royal proclamation october 7 i 3 hag been set aside in canada as fire prevention week it is a week in which the government stresses the heavy loss of life and property caused each year by fies and draws attention to some of the ways we can help to avoid these in georgetown we have been particularly fortun ate these past few years in avoiding major fires which speaks well for the carefulness of citizens generally and the good service provided by our local volunteer fire brigade which is always quickly on the scene when trouble occurs we have been careful in the past and it is up to every one of us to keep up the good work in the future ihis fall particularly it is important to give your furnace a checking over have all pipes cleaned and replace worn out smoke pipes some of the 4 substitute coal we have had to use clogs up chim neys and pipes and makes the danger of fire more pro nounced with so many new citizens in town there may be some who do not know what to do when a fire oc curs simply phone central telling the operator the exact location of the fire she sets off the electric fire alarm at the old town hall which is linked with a buz zer at the phone office and the brigade gets details of where to go from her a sports upset the local softball league play offa took a sur prise turn last saturday when the businessmen pushed huttonvihe out of the series to make the final play offs a strictly georgetown affair the businessmen had their ups and downs mostly the latter during the sea son dropping out of the league when they couldn t get enough players they later reorganized and entered again but up to play off time had still been unable to win a game finally their number came up and by winning the second and third play off games against huttonvihe have gained a chance to test their mettle against a powerful smith stone aggregation which pushed the leagueleading alliance team out of the play offs in two straight games sports fans now have at least three more games to look forward to with businessmen and smith stone playing a three out of five series for the district championship we hope columnist j s s predic tion doesn t come true about running bases in snow drifts and would ask our local weatherman to favour the boys with a few sunny days to wind up been particularly concerned with the deplorable condition of the queen street pavement has continually pressed for action to be taken and in the face of some opposition has pushed a by law authoriz to serve town needs mr bradley has also been an active member of the local fire brigade a service which wi are sometimes prone to forget until rel need arises and wc re ihzc just how badly off wc
