uooilvray harold davison ucnumr of thp canadian weekly newspaper ajworiatloo and tin j ontarioquebec division of the c wn jl the editors corner guest editorial we have asked s p chapman president of the local canadian legion branch to contribute a poppy day editorial this week and hope every subscriber will read it contents carefully and take them to heart this year aa in other years the canadian le gion through its 760 branches and auxiliaries in canada is calling to the people of the dominion to observe more than ever in solemn remembrance the symbolism which has become an integral part of rem embrance day observances and asks that every man woman and child wear a poppy on saturday novem ber 10th in memory of those who laid down their lives in the great war and of those who have made the su preme sacrifice in the presept conflict this appeal is not made on behalf of the lagion or of its members but on behalf of all exservice men who are in need the collection and administration of the poppy fund has been entrusted to the canadian legion this however does not mean that the poppy fund is part of the funds of the legion it is kept en tirely separate and is not even treated as a part of the relief fund it is rather considered as a trust fund which the legion administers for the benefit of all ex- service men in granting relief members of the legion receive no special preference but all exservice mnn stand on an equal footing any man who has ser ved and who is in need has a claim on this fund the poppies and wreaths which you will be asked to buy are made by an organization of disabled exservice men these men are absolutely incapable of earning a living in any other way and but for this industry would be a charge on the public funds if poppy day did nothing but keep these men selfsupporting and selfrespecting citizens itjwould still be worthwhile the organization of poppy day the sales of wreaths and poppies the handling of monies collected the investigation and relief of all applicants are done by voluntary workers no man or woman connected in any way with this receives one cqnt as wages salary bonus commission or allowance for expenses all monies collected are placed in a special account which is controlled by a board of trustees of this branch every expenditure made is approved and every account checked by the board every applicant for relief is investigated carefully but sympathetically relief may take the form of food clothing fuel rent or medical assistance it is practically never issued in cash over a million and a half citizens of ontario wore a poppy in remembrance last november 5000 wreaths were placed in churchs and at memorials in honour of the dead every man woman and child in ontario is ex pected to wear a poppy on remembrance day should any of our friends desire further infor mation on any point in connection with poppy fund activities our branch secretary will be glad to supply it the canadian legion is grateful for the hearty sup port they have always received from the general public to make the lot of the distressed exservice man easier and it is our hope that there will be no partial or per manent blackout for them give generously for your poppyl in remembrance another year has passed since last we paid of ficial honour to the young men who went forth in 1914 and in 1939 to fight canadas war on a foreign soil wars end has brought happy times as every boat brings more and more of our georgetown soldiers home as one by one they doff uniform for civvy suit and take their places again among us to live work and play in peace but everpresent are thoughts of those who will not be returning whose sacrifice was ultimate and who can return to us only in memory it is of these that we particularly think on remembrance day and it is for these that every man woman and child should be at the cenotaph next sunday morning to bow their heads in reverence and humility for the gift of peace dearly bought with their lifes blood can we ever be worthy of such gift can we ever repay the sacrifice of even one life for freedom if we can make this town this province and this world a better place for nev generations to live in if we can work to have peace in our time to settle international problems by saner means than bloodshed then and only then will we make partial payment to those who have died how about it music lovers one of our returned men who was a member k a of the georgetown choral society before going over seas has asked us to help rouse interest in recreating the society a job which we are only too pleased to do curtailment of choral society activities was made ne cessary a few years ago when enlistments cut heavily into the rank of male members and we know that music lovers of which there are a particularly large number m our town would welcome thf return of an organized group now that the war is over and former members are returning home the vocal training and gooct fellowship engen dered in the members the help that such training gives to improving the quality of our church choirs and the treat afforded to the public at theoccasional concert are things which can be achieved by a choral group ptoples church ioo bloor east toronto the sunday morning service of the peoples church is broadcast over radio station chum from ii 00 to 1215 noon 1050 on your
