has ceased to exist it hasnt not yet and it wont if a welladvertised meeting next week in the old town hall is attended by a sufficiently large group of citizens who will show by their attendance that they are interested in having such an organization in town 1 he grc inspired by an original group of fifteen persons and since joined from time to time by several others has had rather a hectic existence since its formation three years ago the re signation of director hal newman which took effect at the end of the year and the uncertainty of whether the town will foot the bill for the hiring of a new direc tor and the payment of some of the neceasary expenses to keep the group functioning efficiently linked with the fact that the directorate wish to know if public opinion favours any recreation program at all in fluenced the decision to call a public meeting to discuss the whole problem as one of the sponsors of a recreational group we are hopeful that the meeting will be a success we still believe that much can be accomplished under a full or parttime director providing the council and the public in general give both moral and financial support the absence of an organized hockey program among the young lads at present is keenly felt and it is still not too late in the season to do something about it the stayathome camp proposed by the lions club could be a part of a new recreation program and there are still such sports as lacrosse and basketball to be intro duced in georgetown the question resolves itself into two main parts the most important is to have a group of citizens turn out next week who by their attendance and enthusiasm will prove that georgetown wants and needs a recrea tion council this accomplished a new program must be drawn up and a qualified man hired to put it into effect whether this will be done or whether the grc will pass into the limbo of forgotten things ja the re sponsibility and the decision of each citizen and par ticularly of each parent who has the most to gain from a recreation program this margarine business the furor about sale of margarine is getting into high geari and we confess that at times we are per plexed and at other times downright disgusted at some of the statements attributed to leaders in the agricul tural business take for instance r w morrison newlyelected president of the ontario federation of agriculture who last week criticized failure of the pro vincial governments to block the manufacture and sale of margarine in canada mr morrison implies by his warning of the threat of deception if yellowcoloured margarine is allowed to be sold that the product is at least similar in taste to butter which spoils other ar ticles which have appeared in periodicals recently which claim margarine to be much inferior in quality our acquaintance with it we may say is purely hearsay we have heard some say that the taste quality is equal and we have heard others who say that there is a marked difference this taken care ef mr morrisons main point is hat sale of the butter substitute is a serious threat to farm economy in his presidential address he said ontario farmers had been striving in recent years to improve the quality of their butter and had made great steps in this direction after this he continued is it just to have our feet swept from under us he concluded with an ominous generality that if they succeed in this you may be sure they will try it with other matters to oyr way of thinking it is perfectly reasonable for those farmers who are specializing in the dairy end of the business to be worried about a com petitive product it is also reasonable to assume that any pressure which they can muster to have their pro duct given preference will be tried but when they whoever they may be are painted as darkly conniv ing to drive the farmer to bankruptcy it is time these gentlemen got hold of themselves do they ever think that the introduction of furm machintavwhich only in the last decade has extended to the small general far mer has probably put a number of farmers who depen ded on horse breeding out of business do they charge prohibitionists who would ban the making arid sale of intoxicating liquors with a dark plot to subdue farmerit who make money growing grain to be used in spirit manufacture do they criticize the agricultural col leges which preach specialization with attempting to wreck the economy of the mixed farmer who cannot compete willi spedalked pi d they believe that it is proper for governments to ban the producing of a product the elements of which are grown by farmers mindyou which has the effect of a public payment of a 40c to 45c pound premium on every sale with the consumer the victim and it must be remembered that farmers making up a large bulk of our population are by the name token the large bulk pf consumers a free economy must not suppress scientific ad vance if we are to have prosperity and progress and the rood wishes of his 1 usiness associates go with him for a successful recovciy perhaps we shouldnt be too bitter at another cent hike in milk price i lie present 18c a quart is still not double the prewar cost while most other items in the family budget are double or more the introduction of margarine which sells at about half the cost of butter will greatly offset the extra milk charges it is slill in limited supply and has not yet been stocked by local grocers i hanks to those who commented on the news paper editorial last week editorial writing is not an easy task when only a cer tain small amount of time can be set aside for it and to know that now and then an editorial clicks gives renewed effort to make this column better when the new water bills go out shortly everyone in town
