porting it and in holding office we would suggest to those who would once again make the attempt at or ganization that they drop for the time being the nom enclature of retail division and make it a clearcut or ganization for merchants who maintain recognized bus iness premises later on perhaps associate member ships could be granted to others but we feel that only those who have stores and who deal in selling retail goods or services to the public would make a homogen eous entity thre are many advantages which could be gained by a livewire group at present some merchants think that the thursday afternoon closing should be changed to wednesday to conform with other towns in the dis trict this point could ije debated and decided upon by the association dollar days and other special events could be planned a credit bureau might be established cooperation could be given in checking on hawkers and pedlars who were not abiding by the new town bylaw which regulatesthem by licence merchants could be encouraged to improve their premises and even the writers pet dream of having main street merchants band together to keep the street free of waste paper and refuse might be realized we urge all merchants to give every support to the committee which is attempting the reorganization it is a sobering thought that while business among lo cal merchants isgood there are thousands of dollars pent each week in brampton guelph and toronto and there are dozens of farmers who shop in other centres who could be encouraged to come to george town at least occasionally old dogs you cant teach an old dog new tricks goes the saying and we are inclined to think the acton repre sentatives on the north halton high school district board are putting themselves in the old dog category at a recent board meeting the following motion was presented by the two acton members of the board that in accordance with a letter dated april 7 1 948 from the deputy minister of education this board do now implement his recommendation to secure a per manent site and proceed with the erection of a satisfac tory central high school which will serve adequately the educational needs of the pupils of this district and that in accordance with die original motion of the meeting approving the appointment of this board that this site be at or near speyside on highway no 25 and that for the purpose of choosing this site a commit tee be now appointed with one representative from each of the municipalities forming the district to bring in recommendations and options for the approval of the board and that these recommendations be presen ted not later than the june nieeting that we engage the services of an architect and take the necessary steps with the department of education and the various municipalities to have erection of the building started as soon as possible the actonmilton papers report that the motion received some discussion but it was felt could not be dealt with at that meeting an amendment was passed that the motion be deferred until the next meeting the sponsors of thelfei6tion declined to withdraw the mo- tion georgetown is very close to joining the district and such actions as this by the acton members make t wonder how well versed they ate with current feel ing on the speyside location we have heard on good authority that a majority of the district board members are opposed to this location we have heard ourselves from die lips of a dept of education officer who is well acquainted with the situation that the department does not particularly care where a central school is placed and is not certain in fact that one central school wul ever be the solution to solving the educational needs of this district and it is disconcerting to find the acton men the idea of including the whole of halton in one large high school district with one central board to administer all secondary school affairs one merit we can ce in acentral board would be the
