difficulty identifying mem bers of tiie newest club which is being organized by r lorusso its v in addition to crop yields i ffects of the tillage implements on the physical factors of the soil are being studied from preliminary results which must be verified by additional data certain interesting trends appeared relative yields of five cannlnn crops with four primary tillage tools 1946 1947 1948 1949 87 49 91 90 100 102 114 from d plots expressed m it will be noted that to date the yields have decreased where disk ing and roary tillage were used while the yields have increased where subsoil tillage was used since the plots had received un iform applications of fertilizer it y was reasoned that the physical con- jj ditions of the soil affected the i y yields several measurements jjj which included moisture content v compaction amount of air space in i the soil concentration of oxygen in the soil air and the diffusion rale y were made at 4 and 8 inch depths to evaluate the effects of the dif- uirent tillage implements on the physical aspects of the soil in brief the rotary tilled plots and the disced plots showed less oxygen in j the soil air less moisture less air j space graater compaction and i poorer ceralion than the subsoil plowed and regular plowed plots as indicated previously this is j only a preliminary report and the work must bo continued over a i 1mger peirod of time before f inal and definife conclusions can be i drawn personally we cant help but wish that some deep cultivation such as that practiced at malabar farm had been combined with
