hj the georgetown herald wednesday jury 26th 1950 ithe editors corner there must be a bettor way upin bruce county the edifi wallcerton paper has been complaining of a young lady coming into town to sell advertising space in a year book for clifford high school the rate of 50 for a small page in the book is exorbitant and yet an outsider can al- ways seem to talk a businessman out of the money the number of merchants who consider this advertis- ing of any value is tew most of them think theyare making a worthwhile donation to a good cause they are but half their donation neyer reaches the cause t all for the advertisinfeolicitor always getaat leaslhalf the gross a case in point is that of the recent musical show put on by our lions club the show was good and u was enjoyed by all those who saw it t the net to the elutyawas about three hundred dollars which is good mbrfey to makefrdm an event but where didthis money come from a page advertisement was used the week before in the herald which cost 5040 there waa 465 worth of advertis- ing sold in this page to dozens oflocal merchantsand a few in brampton the advertising value was nil fif teen of the advertiaersiourselves included were hood winked into it because they were members of the club many others were former members or people who are good friends of club members who had to accdteipany the american lady on her rounds for she insisteasthat a lion must always be with her before she entered a store for her work in encouraging local men to talk their friends out of ten or fifteen dollars and for direct ing the production and as one who had a lot to do with it- the lady contributed practically nothing in this regard the american firm which sponsors the show received iome 380 for this the club received a script a good one which might cost thirty or forty dollars a few costumes which could be rented in toronto and the impetus to go ahead and make some money it doesnt add up if fifteen lions are to contri bute ten dollars apiece to put over a show why not have the other lions equal this and without any 4 work at all the net would be four hundred dollars or look at it this way if two or three local men are going to used their name and the name of the club to sell adver tising at nine times the normal rate why couldnt this be done without an outsider getting half the proceeds we do not mean this as a criticism of a club of which we are one of the oldest members everyone acted in goodfaithand wewere perhaps more respon sible than most for pushing theskow ithas had one value for it has proved to the club that there is money and fun in such a project and another year we would like to see it tried without outside help lessons could help a friend says why dont you advocate in your paper not issuing driving licences to people under 25 years of age he had been reading an article which pointed out that in ontario drivers from 18 to 22 were involved in 576 per cent more accidents than the aver age and in 833 per cent more fatal accidents insurance companies have been charging higher rates when some one in the family under 25 operates the car they work on statistics and are in business to make money hence rates are set accordingly barring young people from driving is of course not the solution at all there are plenty of good driv ers under 25 years of age it is better indeed for a per son to learn to drive when they are in their teens for in the formative yeats learning comes easier there are some things which could be done tests for issuing a licence could be made stiffer and periodical checks could be made to judge competency of those who have licences people could take more advantage of institutions like the long branch driving school which recently advertised m this newspaper high school students might have driving instruction as a part of the curriculum a local garageman has offered to supply a free car and special instruction next year at the school here and it is an offer whjch the school board would be wise to consider a trained instructor could produce a bet ter driver and such a policy if adopted all across the province would be found to have its effect in reducing- accidents pot pourri his friends will be interested to know that a for mer resident albert neale who has been living at malton for the past few years has moved to
