ewtorial the latest and most grave event in the field of sport is the result of itwas recently announced that the interschool track and field several students of ghs have won meet gvith great concern we look outstanding scholarships also se- on the departure of the handsome veral students have won awards trophy which ghs won last year ma possible bv merchants and to a rival school acton not only industries in the town ghs is loss of prestige encircled us but we were not in a position this year to be able to show acton a real com petitive battle so due to this we placed last of the four schools which gives the other schools all the more reason to rejoice but there is a sun shining on the other side of this dark cloud eileen oates claimed the senior girls cham pionship 11 points and dianne harrison the intermediate girls championship 10 points the halfmile trophy was not unseated from our showcase but was claim ed for ghs for the second year in a row by paul barber it has been witnessed and stress ed by our principal that the point winners of the school are not the boys but the girls he claims the 6oys should flnctice beforehand not on the spur of the moment or when field meet day is at hand but through the school term in pt s or in any spare time with prac tice he predicts that the boys would make a better showing and there fore the school as a whole would make a better showing rugby has proceeded with grea ter intensity and the team is riow looking very promising we hope each one of the team members and the school as a whole will support the team with great enthusiasm be cause we possess the rugby cham pionship trophy of last year and to lose it especially to acton would be disaster no matter how you look ed at it cheerleaders are practising too and they know 17 calls which is to their credit because we would not want to be out yelled by acton al so this is the picture we hope the results of our rirst rugby game on thursday are cheerful very lucky to have incentives such as this to stimulate the eagerness to gain higher marks every stu dent has a chance to gain these valuable scholarship and bursar ies by simply working hard and bring up 4he work- lostandard considering the facilities at g h s we should be proud that it has pro duced as many excellent students as it has it has been said that there is certainly no incentive to stimu late harder work but with the in troduction of these new bursaries and the fact that we are going to get a new school should make the enrolment in upper school and marks in lower school improve nobody likes a drab ancient school and that is possibly why ghs has not had a higher number of hon our students s ghs stands now it is severely overcrowded which aoes not make for higher marks in everything ihere is no reason now that we will soon be able to say that we have a comparatively modern school that more scholar ships and bursaries will be won by students of ghs the time is now here to begin thinking about get ting down to work and trying to gain better marks and consequently more of these valuable scholar ships and bursaries mcclure hughes military college george mcclure and bill hughes graduates of fifth form have start ed their course at the royal mili tary college it fa a real feather in ghsts cap because we are the only school which had two candi dates accepted from one school in the whole dominion we wish george and bill the best of luck in their new venture and we are sure that they will make good new building has one standard room it was learned that the addition to the original castle will contain only one standard class room the rest being taken up by a library science lab showers an office and a home economics room the foundations have been laid and plumbing has been started there is usually some noise around the school but this is tolerable when wc realize that it mians that wi re one step closer to our new addition darby berg win silver awards it was announced at assembly of october 7 that alan darby and ola berg had won the 75 award for scholarship in the senior forms presented each year by sid silver in memory of his father bill garbutt plumbing and trying to get around to writing a column or over a year now but just aint succeeded if you re wondering about our name i u try to clear it up while we were 4th formers our loving principal stated the words this place should be called the looney bin so to this day we are known as the looney bin we have among our number three scholarship winnfexs these brain boxes ore eileen oates do minion provincial awards of 100 al darby and ola berg who split the hyman silver award each getting 75 when they get thelr money they re going on a big spree oh yeah in our own field meet our form was nothing short of being sensa tional we had both senior boys and girls championships plus the runnersup in each class the rea son why the boys were in there was that they were the only seniors in the school but in the inter school field meet it was slaughter we still picked up two cups though eileen oates taking sr- girls champion ship and paul barber running out of retirement to get the half mile in a starting 2 f minutes our form teacher by the way is miss parkinson by some of her more affectionate students she goes by the name of pistol parking parkinson she is a real detec tive last year expression on another s countenance has become popular around the kingston pen then there is the type who looks bored about the whole affair and the one who has to be original and instead of say ing
