johns sunday j d g sparrows bunch upon the grass seasons come seasons pass we sense the fact that summer is past it is the season of autumn the time of harvest and as we recog nize that it is now safely gathered in our thoughts tur to thanksgiv lng to whom shall we give thanks our thoughts can go back to the plymouth community landing on this continent over 330 years ago and from them get some of the spirit of theu thanksgiving for their first harest rev john m smith directed the meditation to this at st john s un- led church on sunday morning using the words of scripture o come let us sang unto the lord let us come before his presence with thanksgiving he was helped in this by the very appropriate de coration of the church by the mem bers of the young people s fellow ship displaying not only evidence of our material blessings of ample food for which to give thanks but in the centre of it the open bible also reminding ls of our een greater spiritual blessings for which also to give thanks when the plymouth community arrived safely on this continent 330 years ago steeped as they were in their regard and recognition of god their first impulse was to give thanks to him for this new opportunity then after they had struggled through their first win ter with little food amid dangers and perils of cruelty and possible extinction from without and after long hours of labour and anxiety through spring and summer they were able to reap their first harv est their hope rose high and their conviction was strengthened that god was with them and would sus rain them and probably use them for his blessing of this new land so their thanksgiving to him wab sinciri and dep within a few years the idea spiead to other com munities later to be proclaimed a national observance in which we still join with some it may be observed or thought of as a con vcntion or tradition passed down to us albeit a worthy one to some as a convenience an easy pleasant way of doing something we feel should be done to others it comes as a conviction of god and his provisipn for 111 here a time to count our blessings received from him and to sing unto him and give our thinks as wo read our old testament we fi d it full of exam ples of men and women convinced of the reality of god and his good ness with a natural outpouring of song and thanksgiving o sing unto the lord a new song for he hath done marvelous things make a joyful noise unto the lord all the earth and in the new testa ment the spirit is the same more especially with our knowledge of jesus christ and all he has done for us and for all he has shown us of our father s love and the spin tual blessings which can be ours but how can l best give thanks true god will be pleased with our outpouring of thanks to him sing ing and making melody in your hearts to the lord giving thanks always for all things unto god but how much greater will he be plea sed if we show our thanks by cheerful living our thanks to him in our homes in our work in our play then he and we cap be sure it is something real then too it must be shown in our sharing with those who have not the blessings which we have as a nation some of our abundance is beginning to reach to jesus reedy hungry and sick ones we must keep it flowing ever freer so that they too will be able to give thanks unto god with singing and rejoicing on a steep roufh path up a
