the georgetown herald twelve pages georgetown onl wednesday evening oct 21 1953 twelve pages no strike vote here may be one later a slgike vote taken last sunday among 15000 pulp and paper wor kers in several ontario towns would have serious effects locally should this result in a general strike in newsprint mills while the strike would not dir ectly concern workers in the alli ance and provincial coating mills here these mills are dependent on leper supplies which would be cut off if a strike were called and it would only be a short time until the local industries would have to close down the vote was called by the international union of paper makers when a majority report of a conciliation board recommended against any wage increase in the dispute between 11 afl unions and 13 pulp and paper companies the unions had asked a 5 wage boost and the companies had prop osed a 3 reduction union nom linee senator arthur roebuck rec ommended the 5 increase in a minority report reports today say that almost 98 per cent of vote results favoured a walk out of the 10 894 vqtes tallied there are still some votes to come in union and paper company of ficials will meet in toronto pos sibly next monday in an effort to avert strike action meanwhile a similar strike vote is expected to take place in the two unions in georgetown at a later date no new contract has been signed since last year s ex pired on april 30th the matter has not yet come before a concil iation board but no agreement has yet been reached between union and management in the local mils notice of a strike vote which was to ha e talen place sunday appeared on the bulletin board at the provincial mill one day last week but the matter was held in abeyance when jt was learned that international representatives could not be present that day and a vote was postponed until they could be present the two local unions have alrea dy appointed a nominee to be a member of a conciliation board should the matter go this far he is stan allen local councillor and president of the smith 8c stone un ion mr allen would be a member of a 3man board the others being a company nominee and a third man mutua tgreed upon by the lvo parties while a strike vote is in the air even should this carry it would not necessarily mean a strike loc ally if employees vote in favour of a strike this empowers union officials at international headquar ters to take surh action if neces- bary with so many georgetown people dependent for their liveli hood on the paper industry it is hoped the differences can be ami cably settled and a new con tract negotiated without the dan ger of a strike occurring the weather mr editor and the nice weather with the temperatures in the upper 70s goes on and on era batkin rain date max mir oct 12 59 34 by th school caretaker who acts as a crossing guard two nearaccidents have almost occur red the group asked for a man uallyoperated traffic light fox use while children are entering and leaving school it was further pointed out that the sidewalk from durham street to the school crossing is particular ly dangerous as there is so little space between i and the road and a suggestion was made that a guard rail might be installed here this would have a double advantage of providing only one entranceway to the highway council at a meeting the prev ious monday had already discussed the situation and
