morning sought to keep remembrance of in debtedness to god and the vows mde to him from time to time he used as his subject the unpaid vow and took his text from the 66th psalm i will pay thee my vows which m lips have uttered and my mouth hath spoken when i was in trouble and who hasn t been in trouble sore trouble when there wag noth ing left but to call on god be lieving somehow in his promises even though former vows were still unpaid mr smith s mind went back to early duys when a hymn was widely sung and with much enthusiasm and belief standing standing i m starding on the prom lses of god it sank deep into his memory and still holds but why is it not sung now it id nof in the hymn books can it be that man is not standing on the promises of god fliat in the hurry and bustle of our lives amid all our prosperity our security our self- assurance we are forgetting gods promises so quickly and trying to get along on o ir own until yes until sore trouble comes maybe we have been so richly blessed that it has not come to us yet if not yet it almost surely will so that at some time in our lives we will involuntary cry out to him if not with our lips thert with our heart and soul believing his promise that if we cry unto him in our distress he will hear us and answer answer oh yes but often not just as we expect often not until later do we realize that he has answered us much better for us than our mn asking wait on the lord and he shall renew thy strength what a promise that is come ulrho me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and i will give you rest god is our refuge end strength a very present help in trouble and when we call on him in time of trouble relying on his promises dh we not with our heart and mind if not with our lips make a vow unto him at such a time we lealize how unfair it is to accept his promises and help and yet ignore his command merits and statutes his will for us we are ready then to make a vow promise anything everything if need be many pay their tow the psalmist said i will go into thy house with burnt offerings i will pay thee my vows how many very many forget the unpaid vow how much do we owe if all the vows and promises made to god had been paid would not this world long since have been won back to him to whom it rightfully belongs if we pay him our vows now how soon will his kingdom come and war and sin and suffer ing be done avay with the world over a young minister new in his charge was hastily called to the bedside of one of his elderly mem bers very seriously ill and as he walked he wondered in his inex penence what he could say to such a god fearing man as he knew him to be so he prayed silently as he went he found that his member was very troubled because he could not remember god s promises he was truly distressed the natural thing to do was to mention some of them and so try to bring them back to his failing memory but instead the words came to the young min ister to say but you dont think god will forget them do you his faett brightened oh no he said as he relaxed and was at peace again he must have paid his vows the choir s anthem was god is a spirit the offertory nearer my god to thee mrs e g
