retiring as well as william schenk glen williams who has been a council member for two years deputy reeve wilfrid bird will step up to the reeveahip and coun cillor walter llnham becomes dep uty reeve councillor george cur rie remains on the council and spencer wilson and campbell sin clair are the new councillors william debbie john h bing ham and robert j cunningham were returned as members of the school area board for two year terms and james kirkwood ballin- afad was nominated to serve a one ajear term vacated by hector bird leslie retiring retiringaftrseven years on council and holdpff the highest honour an county politics this year reeve george leslie spoke of the problems of assessment and equali zation which a fast growing county there has been a ten million dollar increase in assessment in one year in 1953 an equalization was arrived at after several meet ings between municipal assessors and the county committee avoid ing appeals which have hampered county administration in the past mr leslie spoke of certain as pects of county work including roads the court house and centen nial manor a 30000 government cut in the road budget had reduced estimates for gravelling grading and work on county lhiks exten sive renovation work is being done on the county buildings which will include a new vault a law library j and redecorating j heflpoke of growth in the town ship the past two years she bore her suffer ing with heroic fortitude she had entered the hospital only a day before her death the former agnes jane cole she was born whll her parents wil liam cole and margaret jane reid lived on the 61h line later they moved to a farm on the 10th line and she attended clay hill school she married mr mckay 22 years ago and for the past few years they had been residents of silver- creek mrs mckay was a faithful mem ber of ballinafad united church where she was active in the wom an s missionary society besides her husband she is survived by a brother and as assistant superintendent of provin cial papers coating mill here has resulted in two promotions of local hen harry shortill succeeds mr dickie as assistant superintendent and herb arnold assumes mr shortuts former position of finishing room foreman at the same time ross duncan has been promoted from plant superintendent to manager of the mill mr dickie came to georgetown from scotland in 1913 as colour room foreman and held that posi tion until his promotion four years ago he is a past president of the quarter century club at the mul on monday afternoon all mem bers of the staff gathered during a shutdown period to present mr dukie with a trilight lamp and lazyboy chair as a parting gift that evening foremen and members of the office stilt held a dinner in his honour at the yellow liberal ladies anniversary in ottawa representing halton at the 25th anniversary meeting of the natio nal federation of liberal women of canada were mrs percy les lie of georgetown and mrs frank mcniven milton mrs mcniven is president and mrs leslie 2nd vice president of the county organ ization the meeting was held last week in ottawa at the chateau laurier besides the business session the ladies had a wonderful social time which included a tea at which ma dame st laurent was hostess a visit to kingsmere the home of mackenzie king which is being converted into a public park and a dinner meeting addressed by prime minister st laurent they atten ded the session of parliament at which lester pearson minister of external affairs explained can adas position in the gouzenko coi troversy they saw heltons mei ber sybil bennett i her seat the house and also visited her her office winners declared as marathon euchre ends mrs thomas warnes and mr william lyons were winners in the oddfellows marathon euchre which ended with a big party in the oddfellows hall on friday mrs warnes had a total score of 796 and mrs norman snyder 792 was second mr lyons score was 801 and second prize went to edgar lyons 794 members of the rebekah lodge served lunch at friday s party and a large number of prizes featured the evening mrs j r scott re ceived a prize ai the oldest person present christmas carol singsong fete robert andrews on 80th birthday a main street north resident robert w andrews was twice hon oured on the occasion of his 80th birthday last week when friends in shelburne
