avw and 7th una vkmtwsmiirssehmxqtw you about the new addition to our household a cat for lo these many years the children have reproached us with the fact that they are practically the only kids in town without a pet so when a grimy halfgrown grey and mrhitekitten presented itself to the herald office and took no notice of the many unsubtle urgings to depart for distant fields friend husband took pity on it and decid ed perhaps this would be our long- delayed pet he brought it home and surreptitiously called me down to the basement to have a preview of the kitten before saying any thing to the family i looked at it it does have a pretty little face and said all right well give it a try needless to say joy abounded in the household the kitten pur red loud and long as we plied it with bits of our lunch which she bolted greedily yes she right after lunch we took her up to dr sayers for diagnosis a little girl cat she was but healthy in spite of her grime and her fleas all these conditions would have to be attended to and they were now boots is a clean cat and fleasless but not flawless 1 just cant understand cats or maybe its only ours a hangover or fear complex from her in fancy when she was a wild rover no doubt i shouldnt try to analyze a rat but i do she likes to be i petted only when likes to be pet- 1 ted usually this is when she is three parts asleep on the softest i chair in the house or when she i is hungry and you arc dashing ar ound trying to ret the family din- fivc t ner with her intertwining herself 0 t thr around your ankles purring loudly were and meowing insistently i have found the easiest way of dealing with this situation is to let my fa mily go hang and feed the cat first unless i want to run a ser ious risk of breaking a leg tripping over her 1 ani not exactly dressed for public appearance but that is what it amounts to as i stand there for several minutes poking my head thro the window alltoovisible to any passerby as i wait for that cat going to come in or not the in decision never strikes her until i actually have the screen out of the window and i have learned bet ter than to try for a grab when she is balancing one foot on the sill thats a grand game and could go on for hours sometimes my ex asperation gets the best of me and i must admit i have slammed the window shut in her face just 1 wickedly hope when she hasreal- ly made up her mind to come in but i can never be sure with cats you can never be sure the word inscrutable assumes a deeper meaning when you actual ly own a cat and also the word independence discussing my problem of trying to get to love our cat a friend said you can never really own a cat well we have a cat and im trying hard to turn it into a pet in spite of all her faults she is a winsome creature when she lies purring contentedly in your arms which she doesnt deign to do very often and which brings us back to the point at which i began telling about the strange catlike way our cat be- hiu lodge season closes with salad supper the members of verdun bebek- ah lodge closed their season on tuesday june 18th with a pot luck dinner at seven oclock due to the very her that was the first and last time she has con descended to eat what we eat at first i merely thought she was a small eater as she left the scraps of meat and vegetables carefully min ced up and put in her plate then i though she was sick then i got tired of carefully mincing up food i thought might appeal to her and broke down and bought a tin of catfood the cheapest variety this she liked fairly well and complete ly ignored our scraps then the next time i went shopping i thought id try the more expensive brand with added vitamins h has bl and i thought her nervous sys tem could stand toning up after the change in environment and her operation and of course from that day to this boats has refused to touch any kind of eat food but the most expensive brand cats evidently know how to
