deciding what to do about disposing of increasing quantities of sewage waste in the most economical manner now and in future years strong pressure is being placed on the town by the ontario water resources commis sion which is interested in clearing the credit of pollution and by delrex developments which was promised adequate sewage disposal facili ties in its agreement made with the town in 1 954 the problem seems to resolve into whether an addition should be made to the present dis posal plant or whether a completely new plant should be built to serve the towns future needs there can be no particular argument that some action is not needed authorities such as the late town engineer the council public works com mittee a consulting engineering firm and or a e berry of the resources commission have al i sta ted that the system is severely overloaded dr berry top government authority in this depart ment said last week when he attended a council meeting that the disposal plant designed to treat 300000 gallons of sewage daily has over twice that intake currently every new house that is built aggravates the situation and eventually the breaking point will be reached when the system bogs down completely what makes the problem extra tough is that no one can predid georgetowns future either a year from now ait ten years from now a few years ago optimists were talking about a town of i 0 20 or 30 thousand people growing up over night subsequent developments have shown that growth does not come that rapidly and yet past statistics and geographical location give ev ery indication that georgetown will have an up ward growth each year even though industry locarion may lag residential development does not a brief submitted recently to council by the delrex firm has statistics which show that a cer tain amount of residential building will more than carry itself in taxes and provide a substan tial surplus to help pay off sewer costs if the del rex calculations are correct perhaps georgetown has no alternative but to follow this course un less is to completely stall building operations on any large scale until industry comes whatever path council fakes is fraught with certain dangers their path must be chartered to advance as far as possible with the least pos sible risk an unenviable position when there are so many intangibles facing them so many factors which are controlled by higher economics a commendable publication staff of the high school year book the chal lenge are to be congratulated on their publica tion renewed this year after being suspended for many years and which is having a brisk sale among people interested in seeing the product in its finished form the attractive book generously illustrated with pictures of students and school activities came off the press spmewhat too late for students to make an intensive sales campaign anxi the herald is filling in by handling this copies at 100 apiece are available at the herald office and we would advise those interested to pick their copies up immediately publication was lim ited to 400 copies and it is expected these will soon be all gone the book is not only of current interest but is one of those things which becomes more valuable as years go by adding to histori- worthy public servant retirement of reeve stan allen at the end of his current term will be a loss to georgetown municipal politics the reeve has been a council member for six years for five of which he has represented the town on county council in 1956 he had the countys highest honour when he was week was quite- a hectic one for legionnaires with parades scheduled for both oakville and milton on sunday afternoon most of the branches in the zone broke up into two parties with some go ing each place georgetown took a bus of members and the wa to oakville where some 13000 people saw the parade and saw rear ad miral h pullcn take the salute ac companied by senior army officers the oakville boys went all out to look after visiting branches and a good time was reported by all un fortunately wc had to rush off to milton and managed to make it just on four oclock the parade there was over but it too had been a large one with thousands of spectators two legion offic ials were present keg otcator re placing henry harvey at the last minute in oakville and 1st vice president fred obrecht in milton both branches were to be commen ded for the active part played in their centennial celebrations and as a matter of interest the arguments have been raging as to whether georgetown has issuing of the challenge has been a partic ular pleasure for trie herald editor several years ago space was offeree in the herald for a bi monthly school paper with the idea of encourag ing the literary phase of school education and this has become a testing board culminating in production of the booklet we hope that hitales will continue in the herald in future years and that the challenge
