houses in a portion of the annexed area of georgetown which a dclrextown agreement presently precludes was read in the form of a brief from h a lever town auditor at mondays council meeting v the delrex proposal made last june has been under study since that time some untie ago on sue gestion of finance chairman gar field mcgilvray council decided u ask mr lever for his opinion on the proposal when it came on monday it was the direct antithe sis of the delrex brief which cla med that construction of the mou ses would provide an annual sui plus of some 50000 sufficient in pay most annual capital and oper ating costs of the new sewage dis posai plant instead mr lever submitted figures which in his op inion would impose an additional tax burden of 5000 yearly on the town mr lever in his brief said the towns credit is near the breaking point after a 4year abnormal ex pansion he said adequacy of pre sent sewer and water mains should be carefully checked before any large expansion takes place indi eating a problem in expansion ol public and high school facilities and pointed thc dangers which georgetown would face if there was any extensive layoff at thc malton avro plant disputing some of the figures contained in the lever report ha rold bairstow delrex general man ager who appeared at the meeting said he is confident that the delrex brief is still essentially correct es timates by mr lever of road main tenance town administration and garbage collection were much high er than they could ever go he said newer town residents are hot all employed at malton mr bairstow said a survey tiken recently showed that of 207 new resident there are 97 different employers represented and there is a fair di versity of employment only capital expenditures which the town would face with 500 more houses would be the sewage dispo sal plant which is to be built re gardless schools and possibly an additional water supply thc latter also in process delrex is still trying hard to get industry to locate here said mr bairstow but under present circumstances no one can say when we will be successful mean while we would like to build hem es if this can be economically done the last thing delrex wants is a rise in the tax rate he pointed out for it would be equally as bad for the delrex company as it would be for the town as a whole i still maintain that even the most pessimistic view would show a surplus of at least 20000 accru ing yearly to the town if 500 new houses are built mr bairstow said cr ern hyde was critical of any action to depart from thc 40 in dustrial commercial ratio prom ised in the 1954 delrex agreement with the town and said he believes it important that this agreement be lived up to every councillor wants to go along with delrex as far as pos sible as long as it is a benefit to continued on page 12 ern hyde a former town superintendent and now operator of a ready- mix concrete plant j orangc- villc ern hyde is seeking a second
