town charges paid f it always amuses mr to read 4he articles cityreporters write about small towns i dont mean the whole article amuses me just the part where they invariably describe it as a sltoepy little town where life moves at a snails pace this observation is usual substan tiated by the accompanying picture of main street which looks quite deserted i think those pictures must be taken on sunday after noon or the weekly day off how misleading can you get little do the innocent city rea ders suspect that behind that quiet facade life moves at a clip exper ienced by very few in the city if georgetown is typical of a town its size and i imagine it is the deser ted looking main street must be caused by the- fact that all its alli ens are indoors attending some ci vic or church meeting bazaar or tea lodge club or community ef fort of some kind at- this time of year particularly there are two or three meetings being held every i night in the week to say nothing of the approaching christmas sea- son being heralded with suppers dances and dinners c all of which serves to point up a little true story i heard the other day a town official and his wife were n vited to attend a dinner and dance being held by a local organization in the legion hall they accepted i with pleasure and when the even- ini arrived our hero hurried home early from the office to spruce up a i a hit and drive his wife lown to the scone of the fcttiviitics arrv- in at the banquet hall hs v- peeked in before actually enter n the rihim and saw that there wee j no ladies present at the pai i somewhat chained she lost n- time in telling friend ityjhand thit he must have made a mistake in thinkiai she was included in the i invitation and forthwith had to be 1 driven home keeling rather sheep ish the husband returned and i dinner was well underway took a few fast bites from the plate f food served to him then looked around the room he began to wonder why certain people he had expected to see were not attending and in fact realized that the man he was sitting beside was not a member of the organization then the horrible truth dawned he was sitting in on a lions meal ing the story had a happy out come for it turned out the man who came to dinner though out of club work for some mm- was in fact a past officer of the lions and he was welcomed as a uest the other function hed rot his dates mixed and was a wc k too early but there were probably two or three other places in town wher- our hero could have wander d ii that evening and been accepted a- a guests at a big dinner who was it said small towns were quiet anyway certainly there not niiv and i have a hunch they never were 0 chuckling over our friends lit tic predicament reminded the editor of the tune a minister in a small town offered to take the service in a neighbouring country parish he ing late he dashed into the sun day school room threw off his hat and coat and hurried upstairs to the church where the strains of an organ indicated the service was ab out to begin and indeed it was nay indeed it had for a mn ister was already in the pulpit pre paring to intone the opening pray ers after a brief bout of frenzied whispering the embarrassed inter loper departed for his proper par ish it was a case of being in the right pew but the wrong church new information sturm telephone subscribers in george town and some
