remember the annual argu ment at christmas time about whe ther or not you would be allowed to actually light the candles adorn ing the christmas tree a very dangerous practice i now agree out of the wisdom of added years but after all the tree never seemed to really come alive until the lights were lit i might add that i usually- lost the argument but shortly a her tha electric candlesbecarne pv- pular so i can hardly renemher when lights on the tree werent one of ttte most delightful ntru of christmas vou know looking back those first tittle strings of lights gav fa ther something to do during the holiday season if there was a had one somewhere along the line the whole string went out ana it was fine sport fo ley to find the troublemaker at least it was fane sporf for the kibitiers and father was able to enjoy the elixir of the evergreens first hand as their j needled boughs jabbed him rudely i in eyes nose and ears while he j buried his head deep in the branvh- 1 es trying to find the burntout bulb or loose connection of course with 1 tv to occupy the leisure hours of his holiday the man of the hoose hus no need for such extra enter tainment and needless to say he is eternally grateful to the brain that invented string of christmas tree lights which uprr ate independently of each ohr now he ran sit hack without those i maddening interruptions nd in joy the tree in all us lightsome glory to go back to can lls for a minute huwrr 1 must say that i feel tney i i help express more than anything i else the glow of the christmas j i season whether they be thuse i flickering little window candles in their coloured glass tumblers i j tall tapers reflecting the shine of silver and crystal on a formal table or just candles of any shape or sue j reflecting the shine of christmas i on the faces of a family assemb- i led at dinner replete with food and the excitement of gifts shar- ed candles create an air of in timacy and warmth and beauty let us girls not forget the lasi important point its rather im portant after a busy happy busy day a good part of which must be spent in the kitchen preparing the christmas feast after the main part of the dinner is serv ed try turning down the bright lights and lighting the candles while enjoying dessert and eof- fee candlelight does wonders for you in every way its even fun making candles ive always been going to try it next year- but probably would never have git i round to it without an impending bazaar to spur me into action at first 1 was really ambimms our candles would he of all shapes and sixes frosted of course ami decorated that was before i read all the directions for making same with each romplieatedsounding di rective my ornate dream candles became simpler and simpfer moulding candtes is an art i discovered to do it proprrly that is the trick j is the wick none of the instruc tions got me successfully over that hurdle a wick in its njtur- al states looks just like a limp piece of string and most of the time that is just exactly what it is too proper wicks being hard i to come by and the thought of standing perfectly still holding onto a piece of string which so far i i hadnt figured out how to ancn- or to the bottom of the mold any way until the wax became solid enough to hold it upright without my assistance stymied me for a while it looked as iho making candles would fall by the wayside this year again i but just at thc crucial moment a talented friend came to our res cue with a very simple version for making those delightful frosted tubby xmas candles bik slabs at urawax fade candle base and all we had to gather up were the i wherewithalls for decorating the i frothy frost ins bits of glitter quins and beads do the trick these we procured so we gathered up a group of enthusiastic would- i he candlcmakers and the bee was i on v that phrase melted paraffin is decepttoekr simple you have to be extrenfety careful during this jairt of the jbpration or wax will thirst into flames and explode thus it is notnjecommended as a project for toowsy housewives at tempting to sandwich the waxmel ting between half a doxen other household duties i know one lit tle boy whose mother had had a couple of flaming misfortunes of this type who told a friend that his mummy had been busy making bombs for a- bazaar all after noon our misfortunes did not go that far but we did get the wax too hot and the vol unteer beater our only cxperien ced candle maker had- jo stand- and beat and beat with a hand va ter while tne paraffin- remained stubbornly liquid and disbelief in the miracle of- the froth ever app earing began to secretly disturb the rest of us frosting department- volunteers the wax took its own sweet time- to cool enough to whip up however but i will say that when it began to whip it real ly whup all over the place and anybody standing within range knowing how rapidly wax sol idifies we rallied around like bees around a honeypot dipping out the hot frothy mass and slapping it onto the smooth sides and tops of the candle with hasty abandon be ing too hot the froth slipped and slid over the slippery paraffin like toothin icing on a cake with three of us to a candle slathering scooping and patting all at once- to say nothing of the decorating crew throwing on the glitter and gems in between the flailing arms of the rrosters pandemonium reigned supreme in that all-too- brier interlude during which the soft fluffy wav remained pliable it took only a few minutes to cool in to the very solid frosting which nmv kes a glamorous creation out of a simple candle this performance we repeated eight times with var iations in the colour or each each creation to our prejudiced and prtud eyes seemed prettier than l the last our enthusiasm lasted ev en into the cleanup chores which were considerable involving the scraping and scouring of wax from sink pots pans and beaters and floor and yes dresses skirts and blouses all i hope is that everyone li kes christmas candles as well as i do and that they sell well at the bazaar it was fun making them and as i said earlier christmas wouldnt be christmas without can dles only thing wrong with the ones we made theyre so big they will last for years im sure next year perhaps well make smaller ones and having more knowhow will produce thorn with less trouble v maybe with less fun too i have just one more nice thing to say about can dles if you happen to try burning them at both ends and who doesnt once in a while at this time of year and you find your living room pretty smoky after the guests
