conducted essay contests within the public schools a prac tice tttat is recommended by the crops soil branch of the onta rio dept of agriculture the weed inspectors manual published by that department suggests the coun ty weed inspector should visit every public school in his juris diction and speak to the children on some phase of weed control due to there being some 87 pub lic schools in halton the majority of which are fairly large graded schools this practice was not adopted through the cooperation of the public school inspectors however an essay competition was arrang ed early in the season the pup ils of grades 6 7 and 8 have been invited to submit essays on the subject my part in weed con trol in halton county a booklet entitled weed con trol guide has been published by halton county council and distrib uted to all the public schools by the inspectors office council has provided a first prize of 300 and a second prize of 200 for the best two essays in each munici pality in addition a grand prize of 25 supplied through the cour tesy of the niagara brand spray- co burlington onv is to be aw arded to the child having the best essay in the county it is also the intention of warden w e card to present a pen and pencil set to the teacher of the pupil winning the grand prize owing to the large size of the present town of burlington it is being divided for the purpose of
