with barrie band the barrie collegiate band un der the direction of mr allen fi sher and sponsored by the st tho mas evening music club came to st thomas last february 7th they played to a good audience includ ing groups of band students from other schoos the band has been in existence for twenty years and has won 42 trophies in canada united states and abroad all the musicians are high school pupils arid most of them have a five or six year back ground in piano and know how to read music a help in learning to play their instrument in a shorter time than if they did not- have his experience most of th and members are taught at school n regular classes and practice pe riods although private lessons are taken by about five per cent some of the members have their own instruments while the rest be long to the band itself after the intermission the conductor mr fisher gave a description of the instruments for the sake of the student observers and gave the pri ces of each for the benefit of the parents he commented on the support given by the bafhe school board after a measure of suc cess had been achieved the band leader then stated that a school must not get discouraged with their first efforts if they do not sound like symphonies after a year or two it takes about four or five years to train a band in order to obtain this effect mr fisher also explained that the band that was playing for us was not the one that went to holland this sum mer he said we have suffered graduation and have lost the cream off the top off the bottle and are now trying to make new cream fjom the skim milk of this year tn a yearor so barrie is planning to start an alumni band for graduates who wish to keep up with their musical work i was sorry to hear that our cit izens band in georgetonw had fol ded from lack of support it is too bad that we do not have more spi rit in our community the boys band has been doing quite well and i hope that they do not go to the same doom it would be wonder ful if more towns would follow barries example when the curtain was drawn all the musicians stood as the con ductor walked on stage i was im pressed by their attractive neatly pressed uniforms they wore red blazers black bow ties white ihirts and blouses white trousers and white socks and shoes the audience stood with them while they played the queen follow ing which mf fisher said commented that pieces such as these gave the students a bet ter appreciation of good music and variety from the popular and the march type next was the over ture to hansel and gretel by humcrdinck this was very well done and one of the younger girls had her first french horn solo in following that the band play ed three south american pieces the rhythm they put into these picecs was magnificent- my toes were tapping from start to finish nd my panamian friend had the greatest urge to get up and dance the trio of latin american favor- ities was followed by a tango a waltz and the march from cinder ella by richard rodgers and all were played beautifully 1 was amused by the percussion section of the band it was made up of five boys who played drums bass tympani snares cymbals xylo phone triangle chime and gourds like two cocoanuts on a board played with a drum stick as they could play each others instruments they switched back and forth nunv erous times and due to the crowded conditions kept getting in each oth ers way and falling over one ano ther to get to their instruments at the proper time and back to anoth er all through the evening they mademe laugh quite heartily the band concluded their concert with atlantic guardian by dr leslie bell the audience stood for o canada on our way back to the school we missed a turn in the road and when mrs sifton came along look ing tor us she was horrified to find that we were not on course but as in fairy tales there is al ways a happy ending and all the girls arrived back at the school iafely after a short stop
