award remembrance of visit of governorgeneral massey for georgetown hajf an hour with his excellency governorgen eral vincent massey was not near ly enough time however in those fleeting min utes of introductions and cere- raony this distinguished visitor captured gebrgelowners like a friend of the family and won the hearts of school children like a generous uncle generous in giv ing them the reward they hold dearest a school holiday a light crowd braved the chill winds at the station to see his ex cellency greeted there by a wel coming party of mayor councillors the members of provincial and fe deral parliaments and their wives as he stepped from his coach be tween the resolute rows of kilted lome scots guard bandmaster alf perrott directing the citizens band dipped his baton and the famil iar strain of the maple leaf ech oed down the route of the motor cade where bareheaded residents briefly abandoned their warm homes to stand at their doorsteps and catch a glimpse of royaltys representative on st georges church lawn hundreds of cheering school chil dren brownies guides scouts and xubs stirred a sea of union jacks as the black convertible carrying the governor general came into sight here on a platform draped with red white and blue bunting the mayor officially welcomed his excellency and in honour of his visit presented the high school with a 100 scholarship to be known as the governorgeneral mas sed scholarship and to be awarded thisyear directing his reply to the child ren governorgeneral massey brought smiles to faces of the ad ult onlookers and drew anticipating beams from his young audience with a tantalizing speech which he climaxed by proclaiming fri day a school holiday on behalf- of the queen mayor armstrong quick ly nodded his consent from st georges church the open cars moved to the cenotaph where in a brief ceremony the governor general laid a wreath in honour of georgetowns war dead an inspection of war vet erans militia and high school ca dets concluded his schedule here and the procession returned to the station where the citi zens band and the girls pipe band played as the viceregal party boarded the train for bar- rie the next stop on the tour which concluded at camp borden only minor damage three weekend fires only minor damage resulted when a car driven by gordon smith of 61 mary st milton burst into flames opposite the pumping sta tion on maple ave early sunday morning despite the height of a thunder storm the smith car a 1951 pontiac was westbound when wires appar ently shorted causing the flames firemen were on the scene in a matter of minutes and doused the blaze with c02 extinguishers on sunday the brigade was baf fled completely by directions to a chimney fire which later proved to be on the r r 2 farm of j-ew- ins they tried for fifteen min utes to find the source of the alarm but finally had to return to the station the blaze was fortunately minor and was brought under control without the firemens bundles of paper stacked behind davidsons pharmacy the flames scorched the back stoop but were held in check by the firemen who had just return ed from their search but for the brigades promptness the bazaar the womens federation of st andrews united church held their regular monthly meeting at cedarvale school for girls on wednesday may 13th as the president mrs kelvin brown was unable to attend
