have the op portunity of bringing to you the developments and expansion of the county of halton for the last ten years halton county is one of the five smallest counties in the province yet we are one of the fastest dev eloping counties and we are the highest assessed or the richest per sq ft of any county in the prov ince the citizens of halton county are a very industrious and prog ressive people it has been by their endeavours assisted by honest progressive conservative government headed by the rt hon leslie m frost that has made those endeavours come true now i would like to give you a little of the expansions of the county of halton for the last ten years the population of the county of halton in 1947 was 34 380 in 1958 our population was 98 232 almost three times uur assessment for all purposes in 1947 was 24 682 466 in 1958 our asessment was 185 379 994 over seven times educational budget our assess merit for all educational purposes in 1947 was 275 387 37 in 1958 our asessment for education was s2 628 700 40 now ladies and gentlemen i would like to present to you the grants that were given by the de partment of education during the ast ten vcars in 1947 87 022 in 1958 the grant was between two and three million during those ten y ears man more undertakings have been con struct ed in the county of halton we have one of the finest homes for the aged in the province this ear we are adding 139 more rooms a chapel and an auditor urn at a cost of oer 900 000 we have a fine hospital at oak ville known as the oakville traf algar memorial hospital brant hospital the citizens of burlington arc in the course of building a large hospital known as the joseph brant memorial hospi tal the citizens of the town of mil ton and district are building a fine hospital which will be known as the milton district hospial the town of georgetown has formed a hospital board and ex pect to start the erection of a bps- pltal in the near future all these hospitals will receive grants from the ontario hospital services commission of 2 000 per bed 6 60 for each bassinet they will also receive a grant of over 600 per sq ft of floor space for x ray operating service and kit chen which in the case of the brant memorial hospital at bur lington will amount to over 80 000 we also expect to start the erec tion in the county of halton this year a school for the deaf at m estimated cost between two mid three million dollars of which the dept of education will pay 100 per cent of the cost burlington skyway we also op ened last j ear in the county of halton the longest and highest road bndge in canada known as the burlington skyway as i mentioned before the citi zens of halton county are a very progressive people but their en deavours in the future will not eap the reward that they have in the past unless they vote the re turn of the progressive conserva uve provincial government that has worked hand in hand with the citizens of halton county in this great expansion ladies and gentlemen it has been a great honour for me to re present such a progressive people and such a very rapidly expanding riding i have always had the feeling that the problems of our municipal governments our school boards public welfare and our different farm organizations had an honest problem to bring before the different departments of the provincial government in that wa it has always been of great satisfaction to me to get a satisfac- tor settlement to our problems it has been a great privilege and honour for me to represent ou in our progressive conserva tive cows in can ada has not varied significantly for man j years remaining at a level slight above three million anim als steadily increasing milk pro duction while influenced on a seasonal basis by weather condi lions csn be directly traced to herd culling and breeding prog rams which have resulted in herds of more highly p cows canadian dairy farming can be divided into two main classes the specialty dairy farm where all the income is derived from the sale of milk and dairy cattle and 2 the general dairy farm whe this culling process is the source of considerable dairj income since it is estimated that 60 per cent of the beef and 40 per cent of the veal consumed in canada comes from dairy herds in a country which sometimes becomes preoc cupied with the importance of wheat is is worth remembering that in a given sear the farm val ue of the products of canadian dairy herds exceeds that of any other single farm product includ ing wheat the dairy herd and its produclt are only a part of the farm busi ness the specialty dairy farm most likely will be producing flu id milk for a nearby city or town i and some breeding stock may be i sold if herd members are ot good enough quality to be in demand the general dairy farm may pro vide a variety of alternatives the milk may be separated and the cream marketed while the skim milk is kept at home as feed for hogs or poultry here again the sale of breeding stock from the hard from time to lime may be an important part of the general farm operation general dairy far mers often have some cash gram or other crop to sell in addition to the milk which may go to concen tratcd milk plants or cheese fac tories in connection with dairy farming it is important to remember that milk is not the only product of the herd in the process of
