resigned in a fine frenzy of foot stamping it was as interesting as it was re freshing rather like seeing little eva putting the boots to simon legree personally i think it was the rst hiing that has ever happen ed to the cbc the rfturting fur ore should mean a thorough house- cleaning long overdue now don t think i m going to launch into an attack on the cbc there is already one weekly col umnist who makes a hobb of this and a well paid hobby til bet it is as his column is offered free and ou don t get free col umos these days unless somebody is grinding an axe for somebody in them there is no doubt that th cbc has gathered to its freudianbreast a number of the brightest and most creative minds in the coun try among them were those pro ducers who led the walkout the other day one must admire their gumption in any age any situa tion many will risk their lives for their ideals few will risk their livelihood on the other hand it is equally apparent that the cbc nurtures a goodly brood of idiot children along with the bright ones these may be found anywhere in the corporation from the board of di rectors down to the girls at ihe iswitchuoard all large public lysupported bodies are equally in flicted when mr davidson dvrtton was the mother of this unwieldy pre cocious and sometimes embeites- slngfemiry everything ran if not lllte clockwork at least as smoothly as a maw kettle movie he manage to keep meat on the table by p a sturdy front and ready tongue whenever his em ployerlandlord called for a reck wing his successors have not been as able apparently because the bright children are staging a tan trum and the slow ones are drool tng badly the result is a delight ful fracas the second in a row that has been staged in the middle of the queen s visit by those weir dies who populate our homegrown broadcasting and television mon ster it would be better than medicine for the tv addicts some of them might even kick the habit it would reveal the povertv- of the private stations if the had no cbc programmes to flavour the slop they- serve it would give the culture vultures of the cbc a chance to cool down and realize that outside the palisades the are no longer unappreciated gen ius but merely people out of a job when the bills start piling up thats probably the best solu tion a cbcless summer by the end of august even the pot- iticans might be missing the i old jarvls street jezebel the enforced holiday would save few millions in taxes families would get to know each other ag ain there would be an upswjng in the national health as people stopped watching those cruddy late movies and got some sleep even the teenagers might be so sicken ed of rockenroll and cowboy mu sic theyd be ready for something intelligent but let me make one thing clear it the cbc board of direc tors decides to accept m sugges tion and shut up shop for the summer i want them to get their nose to the wheel and be rcad to swing back into full operation in september the cbc can and does make a bollix of a lot of things but this would be a sorry country if corporation folded and our nat ional entertainment and educe- tional programmes manefel frow those purveyors of pap the priv ate stations over the years the cbc has given us a lot of claptrap rut it has also provided us with a lot of stimulating intelligent pro rammes and some firstrate en tertainmcnt a good proportion of its stuff is superior to british or u s radio and television and all this on a comparatively miser budget so come back boys and girls all is forgiven you give us a pain in the arm at times but we couldnt get elong without you we wont let those politicians push i around after all they work for us too having explained that the book of jonah is one or the more im portant books of the bible and moreover that it has a message for the world today mr j l graham minister pf st paul s united church in milton delivered a ser mon on the first chapter of the book of jonah mr graham stat ed that god speaks to us today in the circumstances in which c live as he spoke lo jonah in olden times god commanded that jon ah go to nineveh which was a wicked city nineveh had a cor nipt government and its people had lost the moral touch how ever instead of going lo nineveh jonah took ship for tarshish jon ah was not suprtscd vrhen the lots cast by ihe sailors turned out to be against him for he knew in his heart that he could not run away from god jonahs story is not just the story of a man and a fish but the story of a man who had a job to da and who accomplished it the lovely evening of thursday july 2 was a very enjoyable one for the residents not only because the weather was perfect that ev ening but especially because a fine outdoor concert was presented for them by some forty members of the burlington concert band the bandsmen and bandswomen wore their wine and black uniforms they were under the leadership of mr elgin corletl assisted by mr ernie bachelor the very enter taining program was a varied one and the music of the ten numbers plaved sounded very sweet on the calm evening air grand opera was represented by the coronation march from meerbeers opera the prophet and light classical muai cal music by the poet and peasant overture by von suppe march tunes were represented by glenn millers arrangement of the amen can patrol march and by the pa rade of the wooden soldiers lovely waltz danube waves and two sacred numbers cast thy bur den from mendelssohn s elijah and the lost chord by sir arthur sullivan were payed in veryex pressive fashion another fine number was trumpeters lullaby in which soloist bill jerome play ed a trumpet solo with beautiful expression at the close of this very satisfying and enjoyable pro gram refreshments consisting of soft dnnks and cookies were ser ved through the kindness of mr tom wilson of milton five resid nts of th manor enjojed a most interesting motor ride on sunday afternoon july 5th the ride was an extensive one with dundas and webster s falls the destination on the way back the route took the residents over the ufew bridge al burlington the residents who went were mrs haira mrs o howard mis e hannant j bcgley and norman viggers this gener ous gesture on mr wilson s part was very much appreciated miss muriel thompson when you need tv radio appliance service you want them right away and you want them
