will rem ember mr and mrs edward g wodson who used to summer here in the home of the late my nd mrs francis pollock temple road- the wodsons lived in tor onto where the late mr wodson was music critic for the toronto evening telegram for many years while vacationing here mr wod son wrote frequently and fondly about arcadee as he called georgetown iv co many fine tributes toihe excellence of our lome scots brass band were often included in them too real compliments indeed coming they did from a man who made a career from the study and apprec iation of music thus having refreshed your memory you can the better enjoy with me a letter i received from ju frefoea for our holidays i will explain a little later on why i have been so tardy in acknowledging it o enclosed in mrs wodsons letter was a snapshot of their daughter elaine taken in the garden at pollocks cottage in 1933 i can remember elaine starringjn a play written by her father mid produced by st geor ges choir at a big church garden party held on the grounds at the side of the church u i recall cor rectly she sang in the alto section and was pillar of strength in the choir when its ranks were deplet ed by summer holidays about three years later el aine went to england to further tier career in the theatre and she has lived there ever since in her letter mrs wodson catches me up on news of elaine by telling that elaine was six years in war work in birmingham near coventry as you no doubt know both birming ham and coventry were badly bli tzed the cathedral was badly bombed elaine was in the com pany who did the christmas story from the crypt of the cathedral with the altar formed by a burnt beam we heard it there in cana- i da over the radio elaine was in the ministry of labour in birmingham and besides fire watching at night she had fifty women uhder her and if for instance you went to her office and said you could work one day a week in a factory el aine placed you where you could do the best and in a factory if possible now elaine is in charge of training small children who take part in the services of st aidcns anglican church near gravesend kent mrs wodson always looks forward to hearing them perform on her frequent visits to england along with her letter sent a book which belonged to her late husband since it deals with the development of the gov ernment of britain mrs wodson thought it would be especially in teresting in view of the queens visit to canada and 1 certainly found itso i was especially in trigued with the reproductions of 16th century engravings the scr ies of four included one entitled election entertainment by which postelection parties in this day and age are tame im quite sure canvassing for votes and the polling booth both convey an air of excitement the latter pats our modern voters to shame three centuries ago apparently the people were practically falling all over themselves to cast that prec ious vote the last engraving cal led chairing the candidate loo ked as if everybody for miles ar ound had turned out for the fun of a big parade however the book is a really serious study of the british consli- tion it concludes by saying the crown is the only symbol common to all the countries of the com monwealth with its mystical sig ni personfied by our q which particularly explains thai tug of emotion that affected the great majority of us canadians when hrh and prince philip vis ited us irojuly my honest op inion the beautiful joyce notwith standing having spent some seven dmehouse 1st birthday means party at sinclairs randy scott needless of wclland to say the wodsons and the pol locks were very good friends and in her letter mrs wodson asked if i had read the books writ ten by mr pollock that is the reason ihave been so long in ack nowledging her letter before an swering i had hoped to be able to say yes i have to admit thafc my summertime reading has inclu ded only one bitter honey sc far but i do intend reading his others wilderness honey which mrs wodson recommends far above bitter honey jupiter eight and the woods rider after all it isnt right not to read books written by the only fullfledged author geor- 1 getown can claim my only regret is that i didnt read them during j his lifetime mr and mrs pollock lived so quietly and unobstrusive- ly i am quite sure very few people realized he was a writer mr pollocks books are nov- es the bitter honey story and i would assume also wilder- ncss honey contains vivid des- ciption of how a large apiary bus iness is run and how bees are handled this is
