the georgetown herald fottsteet paces what council did auriwrind smond cl mi pod office dapt ottawl georgetown out wednesday sbtembet 2nd 1959 first section suggest ask voters choose ward general vote in town ward voting abandoned several yearsiago in georgetown in favour 1 of elections by general vote was subject for a discussion at mon day s council meeting the wav the town is growing it could be a dangerous thing if one section of town were to elect a whole new council said cr ern hyde as he stated that it would be wise to have a plebiscite this fall to see if voters would favour the move there would have to be a complete revision of the old wards and possibly more wards than the ionnerhhrce he said at the same time i don t mean to infer thaf a councillor should be elected just to look after one part of town mr hyde continued ihe should have a larger view ev en if he does represent one speci f ic area while favouring a plebiscite mayor armstrong was careful not to gave his personal views on ward voting summarizing some of the pros and cons he pointed out that ward partisanship is one of the drawbacks as a councillor tends to try to please the peophwho vote for him al the same time repre sentation becomes more fairly dts tnbuted among centres of popula tion regardless of which voting sys tern we have we must remember that the top three municipal offi cials will be chosen by general vote he said the mayor said that under gen eral voting distribution of coun cillors does not always follow pop ulation densitj the present coun cil for instance has four council members from ward 1 the smal lest ward none from the middle v ard 2 and five from the largest ward 3 he said that if a plobi scite is to be held council must take the necessarv action before november 1st following complaints of contra ventions of sanitary regulations public works chairman john elliott said he had found that a town by law prohibits the use of privies where sewers are available the births v
