bock to tho thirties when weekly newspapers were of similar size or larger in between there was a trend to smaller sheet sizes in 1935 the herald became a 6column paper changed from ifc former four pages weekly to eight or more and at one time was consistently running spnie 16 pages in the new sheet site a few years ago an extra column was added and the page size slightly increased and now in 1959 we have run the full cycle back to the 8column size todays readers however will firvct much difference between present issues and those of a quarter century ago irt those days tho herald hod no typeset ting machinery and every line of typo was a painstaking hand process it was common to use boiler plate prepared columns which were purchased from companies whichprovided a metal plate for housrn were circulated council meetings were besieged b tax payers who opposed the appli cation and generally there was quit a todo during this period it was good to see dem ocrauc government at the mun icipal level ao well demonstra ted by tha people of this town it was a healthy sign for us that ao many people made the ef fort to exert their inalienable tights as voters and expressed their opinions on this very con troversial issue however despite the furor of public opinion the council exercised their right also and ulhonxation for the addition al construction w passed by a recorded vote delrctf on their part made a determined effort to win over public opin ion addressed ratepayers mee tings promised to do every thing tn their power to main tain the industrial residential ratio latjtuooo peopk k uw arrow aad mc us during the past few years there has been an increasing aw areness by municipalities of the financial burden placed on them by indiscriminate unplan ned unbalanced construction georgetown has already had its own share of this it was the lea- son of bitter experience which prompted our council to pass a recent bylaw requiring 400 per lot for houses built outside the 4060 per cent ratio the 400 waa primarily intended to mitt- gate the rising costs oproridlnf education for the increasing populate it should be clearly under stood that mr heslop and his organization came here to make money it is up to the council of georgetown to ensure that as far as their authority provi des the delrex companys ac tivities are conducted along li of mutual beftefil the recent request for release or land for more than a thousand additional houses must bfc care fully examined in council this land should not be released unless such action serves the best interests of the town whole in the proposal delrex says services which should be his sponubilitv in the first place this responsibility must have been realizrd when delrex built the foundations for the pump ing station some time ago and then stopped mr balrttow delrex general manager said in council that the 4060 ratio cannot be lived up to in the foreseeable future aa far as delrex is con oerncd it never has been lived up to during the past four years nearly a thousand houses have been built in the delrex area while the industrial land grows goldenrod we have at tracted sykes tool avian and standard products it is true but thii ia a drop tn the buck et- additional residential build ing ln this town was a logical step when we were a dormito- area for the huge halton plants this is no longer the
