high tales published by the students of georgetown high- school vol 8 no 6 thursday march 8th 1961 georgetown ontario perspiration important aid to student activity colin j hayward the high school student today atoms to receive mora mian his shar of criticism as ah most generalities there is mw basis of truth in this ob- mrvatlon it is obvious that not eery ac is able to excel academic ally but h is aho obvious that to do one s best is a form of ex f highly to be desired how many of us can honestly ay that we are using bur fac alties to achieve the best re nits many of us look on homework as an onerous bur den imposed on us bv a sadis tie cww of teachers this of course is an erroneous assump tion as the only one that ben eflts finally is the student no tiling is easier than to convince yourself that you do not have the ability to achieve high marks therefore it is us less exert yourself more than is barely necessarv if vou tend to arrive at this loncius ion remember whit linstcin said when asked what constil uted genius he replied gen t is five percent inspiration mad ninetyfive percent perspir abon some students feel that one does cot need to really start to work until one reaches the upper school this too is a fallacy if oik dots not receive a good basic grounding in low ei school it is almost jp05 sible to attain dtcent marks in upper school i am sure that any upper school student will confirm this statement another mistake students of ten make is to eonccntnte on the subjects we prefer at the expense of f our poorei ones naturally we should give more attention to the subjects that giyc us the most trouble b doing so one s overall average will be much unproved there is a gi owing tendency to feci that those who are able to achieve high marks are a race apart in most cases the marks attained are in direct re it ion to the amount of work involved today the number of physi cal labourers and unskilled yvorkirs is diminishing under the advance of autom ition ic industry there is however a constintlv mcreiiing demand for teachers skilled technic uiis etc it is plain that a jood education is something that wdj influence jour whole life and that vour future career dep ends largely on how jou use vour present dr wilson by kltan biehn dr wilson director of music for georgetown high school was born and raised in toronto he holds a doc tor of mubjc degree lor and hope he will con unuc with us for a longtime why exams by carol lane exams exams hv whv all this studying frantic studv tag all the double work for jour teachers why bother with xams this is the question that bothers every student ev ery time he or she sits down to gtudy in a room shut off from the rest of the house and the rest of the family shut off from the television and from the ielephone even it is difficult to concentrjte does all his really discipline our minds tram us to conientnle ttoul 1 accomplish just as much if l went on with our weekly mad monthly routine without interruption during the whole school year and then wound up with one final examination at the end examinations arc to test our progress and to indicate how much useful information r manage to acquire thcv also tell us our weak spots the ph ces where we must concentrate 3hey tell our teicherv whit johnny or the whole of john trys class musd wake up to if t skip these tcrja exams we are hurting ourselves not our teachers if we study hard for each one of these it will not be i difficult for us when we come to the finals that informilnn which we have thoroughly learn ed will come back much more easily to us when we sit down to the final test jt la out of the quest to have finals wc might think it is heaven not to have them ftut would we know inv thing at all i am sure vve would just ramble along take in what felt we enjoyed if nnjlhins and let the rest shdi let us study for each set of i as they come let us try each time to surpass what we 3d on the last set let us show everyone including our par ants that we can do well that we enjoy studying that we en joy learning new facts new things new ideas let a go to it with a will much activity in student groups by shirley risky l
