cjndjdale m he tartpd his pufom tpfmm oxpresi tin turpme that he fid been nominated at al nominees were at carefully chosen lo represent at large a majority of organizations as possible and tto wonder for in ttvose days names of thd nominators were publicised in the press foo with tlte implication that the legion lion club other political figures were tol- idly behind the man it happened on occasion that a man in hi first bid for council might be defea ted on the grounds that he caused an elec tion we wee ealous of a democratic pvlv- iurja to choose our councillors but w alto had a sharp eye on election costs sit ting councillors therefore had muci more of an in when it came to municipal elec tions and it was usually only a maor up heaval which ousted these election campaigns were much differ ent loo nmvr wu it onwjered cricket to come out with any platform any defin- big problems then newer residents might wonder rf coun cil had any big problems when the town wit a quarter of its present sie of course h cwd perhaps the problems did not involve i tpucfi money perhaps they were not to important to the future as some of todays major decisions but they were debated i fiercely at anything today and ihey us- isahy had the advantage of being the type of question which everyone could under stand take the yea the park fence needed a coat of paint it took almost at long to decide whether a contractor would be hir- mf or whether a casual labourer would be mupplted with paint as it does to order a new water well or pave a large section of road today there was the quality and otvlour of paint to be debated whether to glv the fence two or three coats whether to paint one tide or two sides l there wat a big problem when the gray coach bus was changed from its downtown location to the top of mam st sill it rocked the town for wecki and while the coach company silently laughed up its sleeve a redfaced council begged them to coma back again there was the time when one coun cillor borrowed a weigh scale weighed a quantity of coal he received at home from m supplier said it wat short and demanded that all the towns supply of coal be check- ad to tee if we were getting full measure there wat the merchant councillor who when complaints were received about it itimnt wi print that i the her alds ad dpirmnt usually reivvd a mo- du tolaciion card topii of which wr alto handed out lo voleti and moit can didates wlvan tlwy gay thrf ordr would tsy oh you know what lo say it wat no easy job when thjrt wr a number of candidatot for th herald lo produca a dozen or more cards 6ttntiahy tins ian but with variations the colour of tha pa- parr tiock was important loo wnh only a half a dojun colours to uia one had to be careful that known political enemies dd not gat lam colour of paprr while there was no election campaign in print or from a public platform paopla wer people however and tfiare war soma hot campaigns earned on behind th- tcvnes the toughest kind to fight sgamit of course because while a tpokan or writ ten stjtenwnt can be refuted how does one go about correcting a well placed rum our well its a rww era now as exciting in its own way as the old type campaign ing there is something tout elections which brings out the best and worst in hu man beingi politicians be they federal provincial or municipal are considered fair game h the cntics today perhaps this criticism is mor in keeping because we are past the days when th tiortour of the job wat th only thing at stake today sparked by the ten or governnunts which provide a fulltime job at full time pay for the winners muni cipal politics has become a mixture of hon our and pay also no longer can a poli tician unless like one man hre he declines his offered remuneration tell a ratepayer to quit botlefing him or tee him m business hours he 11 to some extent an employ ee of every resident and he is more at the beck and call of everyone than he wdi in those days whether the new system is better or worse than the old one could be debated from here to eternity in our opinion we have had good men middlemen and med iocrities both with pay and without too bad roads blamed it on the city peddlert who used georgetown i roads but didnt pay any business tax and accused his fejiow councillors of helping out by buying from them instead of the local businessmen last years donneybrook about the old post office wasnt unique either when 1he bank of montreal closed itt branch during the early war years it wat bought by the town for a municipal building one coun cillor criticized the sitting mayor severely and the mayor oame back with an offer to buy it himself for the tame money the irate councillor changed tails immediately and started to worry about what the mayor might do with the building it turned out lo be an excellent bit of business as if hap pened for the royal bank paid the town a substantial bonus when it purchased the property after the war one of our greatest chuckles was that very bank building the mayor and reove were political opponents and then wat no great love lott between thom at th council table this night we watched a one lit a cigar puffed reflectively and so it down in an ashtray at the meeting went on we noticed that while both were smoking there was only one cigar first one then the other would take a puff or two then it had to happen both reached for the cigar at the same time the pipe of peace was talked about for many years and perhapt broke the shell for eventually the men became much less antagonistic j fall fair nrwtpaprr he did not contradict any of my statement instead i with o speak on the council meeting of july 2flth only do they hae to pay for the wasted water but the town charges an extra m per cent to allow them to put the dirty water into the sewer i itnlt this la a pretty profitable agree ment for the town no wonder there were members of coun cll who opposed installing the iron removal plant
