georgetown herald 22 main street s georgetown ontario w c wwn puwwwc page4 thursday february 17th 1946 editorial comment value of local names with georgetowns sixth public school now underway one of the school board s chores it to select a suitable name this is in one way a minor but in other ways a maor task for a board for a nam is even more permanent than the bricks nd mortar those can be repaired but it is seldom that once named a building ever changes there are two schools of thought one b to avoid parochial designations and stick to the memory of national and world per sonages aftdplaces the other arid more difficult is to honour the memory of a local person or family and difficult as this makes the ob we incline to the latter ides present schools are a mixture the original public school was named chapel by necessity when a second school was built while this is the street on which h is located there is some history in rha name too as the street took its name from the methodist chapel which adpins the property the new school honoured howard wngglasworth highly respected public school principal at the time 6f his sudden death later came harrison aptly named foe a family long associated with georgetown education the father a principal daughter a teacher and son school board secretarytrea surer and town clerk park school was sim ply named for its location adjoining the municipal perk george kennedy school took its name from the towns first settler the town itself was named for the first kennedy there are names which come to mind when considering a name for the new school miss annie ryan was principal of the old public school for a lengthy term and her family was closely associated with town affairs the barber family is wie linked with georgetowns industrial roots as is the dayfoot family it has always been our hope that such people would be remembered and hon oured as new buildings and new streets re added to georgetown forecasts huge expansion civic officials attending a dinner last week heard a forecast that within ten years georgetown would add 15000 new resi dents and 75 million dollars in property development bruce mclaughlin president of a firm which has acquired the bulk of the rex heslop del rex developments holdings was the speaker introducing his firm metropolitan hal ton development company to officials of 3 halton and peel counties mr mclaughlin predicted a glowing future for a town which has been poised on the brink of expansion for some time the new future began in 1954 when mr heslop acquired a large esquesing acreage later incorporated kitp town lim its which has doubled our population in a decade added a large area of serviced industrial land a number of new factories housing subdivisions and a shopping plaza mr mclaughlin while revealing no spec ific information hinted at a maor food store trust company and bank as interes ted in locating here and said negotiations are well advanced with manufacturers of home components a chemical firm and an electrical manufacturer hts remarks are something to get ex cited about though one must discount to some axterjt the optimism which necessar ily is part of the makeup of a land devel oper there are many factors involved when it comes to new factories new commercial enterprises and largescale house building the money market supply and de rnand international trade receptiveness of the local council in supplying services all play their part when it comes to projects of this size georgetown has the geographic loca tion and the potential to become the city which metropolitan halton has in its sights we hop that the development will be or derly that we will not be asked to bite off too big a chunk at a time that the new businesses the new residents will be of a desirables sort for georgetown s future pros perity and happiness for growth is good only if it means at least a maintenance of the living standards and working condi tions which exist at present honours for georgetown while georgetown little theatre mis sed out in being chosen to compete in the western ontario drama festival members can be justly proud in the honours accor ded vera maodonald mrs macdonald who plays a starring role in the next pro duction was chosen best actress for her performance in oh dad and while the honour now belongs to owen sound tony lloyd who directed ma ny georgetown productions in past years received- similar aooolade far male actors little theatre since its inception some years ago has steadily progressed and as the adudication reveals is of profes sional calibre one play has been in festi val competition and lynne hyde who is directing this winters show was a prize winner for set design there is one thing which has been lacking although audiences have been ad equate and there has been general appro val of the plays to date there ere always vacant seats there shouldn t be a town of georgetown s size which lacks a cinema should support such enter tainment to capacity the latest play for instance is not long gone from broadway has successfully been performed at the crest theatre in the city and should be a good example of modern theatre upcoming tc arsenic and old lace a tried and true farce on stage and screen which no one will want to miss a theatrical production is the result of months of tiard work by actors director designer and backstage workers who must coordinate their efforts into a couple of hours of skilful makebelieve for a play to be at its best demands a large and re ceptive audience we hope georgetown will give this in good measure when the lights go up later this month in the high school auditorium harley to halton weekly oftservations by dr harry harley mp for halton 8d9ce the
