people by that time he said people in strawberry boxes h id hb nrfmutiftn and- other groups were alarmed ab out the situation in toronto township where lots for family houses are selling for 8000 it has reached a point of economic insanity it will mean more apartments said the de veloper we are bringing in an age of affluence but we are putting more and more people in strawberry boxes too government la being prod ded by one of its own back ben ch members of parliament to take early action on registering canadian drug manufacturers twice in the past week dr harry harley mp for halton has questiondtbe government about its intention to implement a recommendation of the spec ial commons committee on food and drugs which was head ed by dr harley the first question placed on the order paper by dr harley asked if the government intend ed to register drug manufact- facturers the reply given was a traditional one used by the government when it wants to brush off a question it said this was a matter of govern ment policy jvhlch would be an nouneed in due course but this did not satisfy dr harley who has placed a second question on the order paper with slightly different wording he asks if the government is giving consideration to register ing drug manufacturers as ret ommended by the committee if so wha has the face identification enough cash cheque the staff at the royal bank bad no trouble identifying one stranger when he appeared at the tellers wicket last week to cash a cheque it was gordon sinclair radio and tv personality his tv exposure on front page challenge made further identification he said there is a clear need for a strong government unit in the form of a metro plan 3lr mclaughlin urged the commissioner to think of hal ton and peel counties as a me tropolitan unit the same as exists in metropolitan toronto barter standards he said there had been prob lems with developers in the past in halton and feel but felt there were enough respon sible developers in the area now that were anxious to create better standards as developers we have not geokoetown devaopbt s bruce mclaughun done a very good job he add ed the blame for this lies on the entire legal planning government monstrosity that we have built up he also warned of a gradual unorganized takeover of the area by a suburban sprawl from metro toronto wc dont believe that just because toronto is the mother city it should slop over onto the surrounding areas i think these areas can develop to a position where they are compe titive with metropolitan toron to he said other points in mr mclaugh hn s submission were the northern region of cal edon township with its source of nonmetallic minerals will become important in the future this area could become the re creational area for the entire district as hinterland let orangeville develop as a hinterland free from a metro control no four year terms of office for elected officials we have had some bad nefficient ad ministrations imbedded for four years unless their faults could be spotlighted planning and development brings prosperity but you have to leave some room for the freedom of people s ideas the more authority there is the more things beenme bnc mortar mundane we can go to the people now and be reasonably sure of a hearing but not so when we go to queen s park when there arc many com muni lies with conflicts a two tier system of government is required wc call this a metro system mr melaiirhl n s brief said there should be four metropol itan governments between osh aw a and hamilton he said halton a nd peel should bo mctropolitanucd oshawa and district could be another metro area he sug gestcd burlington merging with hamilton to become the third metro metropolitan toronto is already established government taken in una re gard in the past commons comm htecs have often expressed fru stration over the fact that they can hold dozens of meetings and interview witnesses hear testimony and then prepare a careful report which simply gets pigeon holed with little or no action ever taken by the govern ment of the day rr harley is hopeful that by prodding the government with questions at least qiult his committee s re commendations will be imple mented georgetown hospital news la clark a report of the annual meet ing appeared in last week s news column however we d like to say how very gratified we were at the turnout of asso ciation members while still numerically small it shows far greater interest by members than in former years and pos sibly a reawakening of the in terest
